Challenge 1 – Hack the port: Find the gaps in our security system

and secure it (To Be Confirmed)

Ports are facing huge safety risks. Not only in the harbor itself but also when it comes to the virtual

security system. We invite you to hack our port network and see where the gaps are.

Can you develop a solution for the gaps found and secure our network?

Hack your way into our network to see how cyber-resilient we are and what we can do to improve it!

Challenge 2 – Open data and new Technologies

Could we, by using open data and new technologies, make use of new forms of collaboration in the

port?

Is it possible that by implementing open data, the port and port companies can become more

connected and strengthen each other?

How and what kind of new technologies, such as, Virtual or Augmented Reality, and more, can we

implement to help us shape the BlockChain Port of the Future Logistic ?

Challenge 3 – Smart devices as a mean for a safer harbor

In the Port of Antwerp, safety and risk are crucial for us.

As the port is a big and complex world, it is not easy for us to keep track of every single usage of

machines and the movements of people.

For example, some harbor workers are active in isolated or harder accessible areas in the port.

Some machines or storage rooms aren’t easily accessible.

If we implement IoT, Wearables, Beacons or Drones into the port, could we make the port smarter,

safer and more connected?

How can we make it possible for firefighters, safety people, medical staff, … to enter these areas in a

fast and safe way?

By using smart technology, could we track risk behavior or people in the port and see when and where

they are in a dangerous or difficult situation?

Challenge 4 – Education of New Technologies

By implementing technology, the port gets smarter day by day.

How can we make sure that tech and humanity go hand in hand and strengthen each other?

Technology advances every single year, how can we keep our people at the Port of Antwerp up to date

with the newest technology?

Is there a way that we could, for example, implement Virtual Reality into the education of harbor

masters, so that they not just learn from books how to make sure a ship moors correctly into the port?

How can we make technologies accessible and understandable to people working in the port who are

new to these topics?

How can we connect everyone in the port with these tools?

How can a harbor worker make use of beacons, 3D-printing or Virtual Reality?

Help us unite these two worlds to bring the port to the next level!

Challenge 5 Optimization of Berth Management

Inland ships can, in contrast to ocean vessels, come and moor at the quay of the port of Antwerp

unannounced. Often the inland ships are taking the place of ocean vessels, which then causes

problems as they need to leave the quay again.

How can we create a berth management system that makes sure inland ships know at which quay

they can moor?

How do we make sure that inland ships with dangerous goods moor at the right quay?

Could we let inland ships moor at a reserved spot for ocean vessels for a temporary time so all the

quays are used efficient?

Challenge 6: Optimization of inspection

Due to the inefficient communication between Customs and FAVV (physical sampling and laboratory)

there occurs a big loss of time when a container needs to be inspected.

How can we make sure that planning can be done more efficient so that the right staff and materials

are at the right place?

How can we make sure we do not lose any time with the selection of transhipment containers?

Challenge 7: Efficient way to follow up free storage for import

containers

After a container has been unloaded, the receiver of the goods has a certain amount of days time to

pick up the container.

Once this date is passed, the shipping agent will charge the receiver a fee per day per container. The

amount of “free days” and the rate (per diem) is a commercial negotiation between receiver and

shipping agent.

How can we make sure that the receiver doesn’t get an unpleasant surprise when receiving the bill?

Is it possible to make a universal application which can track the agreed term and warn a receiver

when that term is almost over?

Could we link this system to a planner so the receiver can automatically plan its pick-ups?

Challenge 8: Track and Trace Hazardous Goods

History in the Chinese harbor city Tianjin showed that it is very important that we know exactly which

container contains which type of goods. Containers come and go in the port of Antwerp so we have all

kind of goods.

How can we make sure that the client made the correct statement of the goods in the container?

Can we use smart technology (drones, sensors, scanners, …) to find hazardous goods easier and

quicker?

How can we use technology to make the port safer?

Challenge 9: On land and at sea – transportation insights (trucks,

railway, …)

Goods in the harbor of Antwerp are transported via various different ways. Via road, railway and sea.

How can we develop a system so we can get a clearer overview of the location, destination and goods

on land (trucks and railway) and at sea (ocean vessels)?

How can we use this data to make the transportation more efficient in means of container usage,

duration of transport, …?

How can we use these insights to lower the cost of transportation and lower the emission?

Can we develop a system that can detect the most efficient transportation means and routes based on

its end destination?
