IBM System x with VMware

• Started an ESX deployment with HS21 blades and were able to get 10 - 12 guests per blade.

• Then we started a new Distributed Platform DEV network

using the newly released 3850 M2's

– More RAM density

– Better Performance

• Cluster expanded to 9 VMware hosts running 4.x supporting

500+ guests.

• Internal LAN growth and a Virtual First Initiative

• LAN Clusters were 8 nodes at each data center with a 50 - 60 guest average

• Mission Critical applications on VMware

• Performance was better on the virtual platform than their older

physical servers

• As we upgraded to the X5 series we got better consolidation and performance

• Over the past 3 years we have had 100+% growth (1,000 to 3,400 guests) in our VMware environments but have been able

to maintain the same 90 socket count.

• Through the releases of X5, vSphere 5.0, 5.1, and current Intel

Westmere and Sandy Bridge processors we have been able to increase our physical to virtual CPU ratio from 1:3 to 1:8

• From what we have seen X6 will take this to a whole new

level

• Performance is out the park!

– New technologies such as eXFlash

– This will allow is to be able to move our largest most intense applications and Databases to a virtual platform

• Better consolidation and performance
