A film trailer is usually 2-3 minutes long and it promotes the film by showing you some of the best bits and most of the main characters.

Film trailers always make sure that they show you the best bits about the film because they want you to go and watch it at the cinema, and tell everybody about it so that they go and see it .

The platforms that they can be seen on are:

•Cinema•YouTube and before a video plays (Advert)•Cinema Newsletters – Promotion from the actual company, which will help to promote more films by sending them the trailers.•Facebook

If this video was put on Facebook it would of went viral in minutes.

Technology – Digital Video Capture

Firewire cable – a fire wire cable will allow you to digitally capture a video that has been recorded onto a camera. What you would need to do is plug you camera into a laptop and then open your specific software you are using and then using that cable you can transfer your video straight from the camera to the laptop to save or even better to edit it to put on a educational site or media platform.

Transferring video from tape to digital –

Technology - CompressionVideo compression uses modern coding techniques to reduce redundancy in video data.

Basically video compression, squeezes the massive file together and makes the file size smaller but keeps the same quality to play.

Lossy – lossy is a what happens when you compress a file, you keep the same file and not loose any data, but will come in a lower quality once it has been compressed.

Lossless – Loseless is another way of compressing, it will compress the video and you may loose some data but will make the quality of the video better

Technology – Digital Video Formats

These are some of the file formats used when recording video or even converting them, from 1 file to another. All of these file formats can be used when creating video and are all recognised by windows computer and some of them may be recognised on a Mac.

Mpg - .mpg, one of a number of file extensions for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 audio and video compression.

Mp4 - MP4 is a digital multimedia format most commonly used to store video and audio, but can also be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images.

Mov - mov, filename extension for the QuickTime multimedia file format.

Avi - Audio Video Interleave, a multimedia container format and file type

Wmv – WMV is a video compression format for several proprietary codecs developed by Microsoft

Asf - Advanced Systems Format (formerly "Advanced Streaming Format", .asf), a Microsoft streaming format associated with Windows Media Player.

Page 14: Interactive media guide

Technology – Streaming MethodsDownloading is basically going onto the internet and finding something that you want e.g.. A application for a job, you would download it and would appear straight on your desktop to look at, same goes for music or video.

Progressive downloading - A progressive download is the transfer of digital media files from a server to a client, typically using the HTTP protocol when initiated from a computer.

Streaming - Video streaming is a streaming of frame one by one. A example of streaming video is on sky TV, if you want to stream a video from their collection, what you do is you click on the film you want and you stream it. When it starts to play it will start to stream right until the end which means it downloads the rest as you watch just like downloading videos off sky.

Sky is prime example of downloading and streaming for videos. Also Ustream is another web platform you can use to stream live videos to whoever has the link to access it.

Technology – Data TransferThe data transfer rate (DTR) is the amount of digital data that is moved from one place to another in a given time. The data transfer rate can be viewed as the speed of travel of a given amount of data from one place to another. In general, the greater the bandwidth of a given path, the higher the data transfer rate.

16 kbit/s – videophone quality (minimum necessary for a consumer-acceptable "talking head" picture using various video compression schemes)128–384 kbit/s – business-oriented videoconferencing quality using video compression1.5 Mbit/s max – VCD quality (using MPEG1 compression)3.5 Mbit/s typ — Standard-definition television quality (with bit-rate reduction from MPEG-2 compression)9.8 Mbit/s max – DVD (using MPEG2 compression)8 to 15 Mbit/s typ – HDTV quality (with bit-rate reduction from MPEG-4 AVC compression)19 Mbit/s approximate — HDV 720p (using MPEG2 compression)24 Mbit/s max — AVCHD (using MPEG4 AVC compression)25 Mbit/s approximate — HDV 1080i (using MPEG2 compression)29.4 Mbit/s max – HD DVD40 Mbit/s max – Blu-ray Disc (using MPEG2, AVC or VC-1 compression)

This list above shows all of the rates that videos play and record at.

Page 16: Interactive media guide

Technology – File SizeResolution – these are some of the resolutions options of a digital camera.1080p = 1920x1080 pixels (16:9) 960p = 1280x960 pixels (4:3) 720p = 1280x720 pixels (16:9) 720p = 1280x720 pixels (16:9)WVGA = 848x480 pixels (16:9)

Data rate – data rate is the rate at which information is being transferred

Frame rate - frame rate is the rate that a digital camera produces unique consecutives images called frames, Frame rate is most often expressed in frames per second (FPS).

Key frame rate – a key frame rate is having a start and a end to a film and making it run smoothly from your starting point to the end.

Compressor - video compression, squeezes the massive file together and makes the file size smaller but keeps the same quality to play.

Technology – Aspect Ratio

Aspect ratio is basically the picture of a video and how big it is going to be. E.g 12” inch screen will play 12” inch video’s

4.3 is the old style TV size as back in them days, when them TV's were being made they did not have the technology to make them bigger and produce better picture quality.

16.9 is the widescreen TV picture size, as now they have the technology that they didn't have many years ago to create bigger screens and better pictures.

30/40/50 inch TV’s - the screens and picture quality on these now is just incredible, the way they are made to create better picture and quality just determines the price as these sizes are quite pricey, anything between £4/5/600.

Technology – Media PlayersFlash player - Flash® Player is a lightweight browser plug-in and rich Internet application runtime that delivers consistent and engaging user experiences, stunning audio/video playback, and exciting game play. – flash player is used on most websites you visit now eg. (facebook, youtube, twitter) and much much more.

QuickTime - A powerful multimedia technology with a built-in media player, QuickTime lets you view Internet video, HD movie trailers and personal media in a wide range of file formats. And it lets you enjoy them in remarkably high quality. – QuickTime loads faster than flash player and mainly used on apple devices

Wmp - Windows Media Player (WMP) is a media player and media library application developed by Microsoft that is used for playing audio, video and viewing images on personal computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system, as well as on Pocket PC and Windows Mobile-based devices. – WMP is mainly used on windows computers and can sometimes be very slow where as other programs on the market can make watching videos more enjoyable and most of all, a lot faster.

Out of all of the programs, i would use QuickTime as it is so much more reliable than other products because apple have made it to the standards where people should never have a problem with it, they put a lot of money and effort into making products and expecting them to work perfectly 1st time, most of the time they do but sometimes fail quite a lot. Personal preference really, its what your prefer but most of all the cost, all of these programs are free to download off the internet.

Technology – Digital Rights Management System

Download a video and only have your own permissions – a video that has been placed on YouTube of yours, gives the right of nobody else downloading off a site because it is not theirs to have.

Protected content is a way of making sure that people don't pinch your item, protecting a video means that people can watch it, as many times as they want but cant use it without your permission. It is best to have all your data protected so that people cant claim that it is theirs.

The Benefits of protecting and having your own permission on content means that you can put it all over the world, without anybody claiming that it is theirs, if they do and you can prove its yours you can charge them for not asking your permission to use it.

Media producers these days will protect their cd/media/video straight away so they are covered, producers these days create music and videos from scratch, they don't want to put online for somebody to steal and claim its theirs so if they protect it before they put it out, they wont have any problems.
