IntroductionIn this assignment, students are required to do a literature research on the places of interest of our site visit. Our job is to study the theme and relate it to the historical, architectural and social aspects of the place.

After that, we will have to design a postcard series with a proper packaging that complement the final postcard design. The postcard series will create awareness and educate your audience on the subject matter or focus of the study. This includes design & layout, purpose, content, writing style, colours and etc.

Research Concept

Over the past few years the importance of reminiscing for both the older person and their communities has been forgotten. Reminiscence is a blend of historical fact and the personality of the person remembering. Each person perceives each experience through their own life and memories become shaded as the years pass. Hence, my objective is to bring out the lifestyle in villages, where it contains most of the past memories of the older generation, recover it by carving down the village lifestyle under the hand of my camera.

Themes

Architecture- Spaces and People

The theme I have chosen is under the Architecture category, spaces and people. The reason I have chosen this theme is because I want to bring out the interaction between the residence in urban village and the places they are staying in. Reminiscence can be brought out alone by just a person; however it is more fun if it shows the connection between human and the spaces, and also with someone else.

Page 5: Introduction

In order to take a good photograph of lifestyle in villages, background which included human in each photos are a crucial part to tell the stories of the photos. It is because memories are built in such a way that one memory naturally leads to another. Thus, without interaction of human and spaces, the photos would become dead.

Summary of ResearchFirst stage- Explore the places in Malaysia

After decided the suitable theme to proceed on, I’ve chosen places which contain a long history itself in order to bring out the message of Reminiscence. The first option would be the China Town in Johor Bahru, Johor. It is a small town which shows the long history of Chinese presence and traditions in Philippines. However, the place had become too urbanized; the old culture has no longer remains. In the end, I’ve decided to choose Kampung Pasir Putih which is also located in Johor Bahru, Johor. The primary sector of which contributes the economy of this village is its agriculture and commerce. Malays, Indonesians and Pakistanis are the main residents in this village.

Second stage- Taking the Photographs

Before heading towards the places of my interest, I went to several places to practice my photography skills. I’ve went to Little India, China town and other places to sharpen my skills so that in the end of the day, I could take great results. On the day to take photographs, I and my friends had proceeded to Kampung Pasir Putih to capture photographs. My research and learning experience guided me in taking better photographs for postcards. I’ve took some great photos there. It was great to be companioned by friends.

Third stage- Finalizing the photos

During the next C&C tutorial session, I’ve shown my lecturer, Ms.Dee my photographs. She guided me and helped me in choosing photos which could best bring out my theme. After that I started working on by editing photos. I also conducted a few research to find the best way to design my folder to hold my postcards. The researches I’ve did so far helped me a lot during my process in making the postcards.

Mapping of the PlacesKampung Pasir Putih, an urban village.

Kampung Pasir Putih is a village in Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. This village was established in 1920, along with three other villages, and is the only one that still exists today in Pasir Gudang. The primary sectors that contribute to the economy of this village are agriculture and commerce.

Rationale

The reason I choose Kampung Pasir Putih is because it has a very long history which could best bring out the message of my theme, Reminiscence. The simplicity of life in Kampung Pasir Putih also shows the most primitive human interactions and life events.

Draft Photos and Layout PlanningInitial version of logo and Back Template.

Initially, I’ve decided to draw a picture of an old man to bring out the reminiscence life he had been through. In my opinion, old man is full of wisdom and life experience. No one’s been through on what what he have been through.

I’ve made the outer surrounding of the photos became slightly darker than the brightness in the inner part. It is because that I want to deliver the message of ‘Vision’ in my title, which indicates the view from the corner of my eyes, which also represents the witness of the recalled moments.
