INPUT/OUTPUT AND I/O DEVICES
Nick GortonJace Sadowsky
Input and Output
How data is received into a computer system, and how information and the results of processing are provided to the user from a computer system.
Input Devices
Used for taking data and entering it into a computer system.
Different types of input devices are designed to accept different types of data.
2 types of data are human readable data and machine readable data.
Source Data Automation
Automating data entry where the data is created, thus ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Used by librarians, many rental car companies and other professionals.
Used to scan books and cars to collect data.
General Purpose Input Devices
A device that is made to be used for a variety of computing activities.
Keyboards, pointers, touch screens, multi-touch displays and microphones are general purpose input devices.
Special Purpose Input Devices
Provide data input for one specific type of activity.
Game controllers, joysticks, webcams, page scanners and handheld scanners are special purpose input devices.
Special Purpose Input Device Uses
Businesses and organizations use special-purpose scanners and optical readers to collect data.
Card swipers are another way of collecting data into a computer.
Card swipers are used to verify the identity of individuals wishing to access secure locations.
Output Devices
Allows a user to see the results of computer processing with one or more senses.
Good output devices deliver information in a manner that allows the information to be interpreted easily.
Output Devices
Computer output consists of data results that are observable by human senses or that can be used as input into another system.
For example, iPod users synchronize music from their computer to the iPod, with the output of the computer acting as input for the iPod.
Types of Output
VISUAL AUDIO
• Monitors• Printed Documents
Speakers Headphones
Video Cards
Combine video processing and storage onto an expansion card or onto the motherboard to manage video images for display.
Video cards provide important capabilities for today’s graphics-intensive software.
Also known as graphics cards.
Video Card Uses
Video cards manage all images sent to a computer’s display.
Devices that use video cards include: Microsoft Windows Vista Mac OS X 3D computer games
Display
Provides visual computer output on a monitor or screen.
The most common form of computer output is visual on a display
Types of Display
Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Older, bulkier
televisions Liquid Crystal Display
(LCD) Thin flat display using
liquid crystals Plasma Display
plasma gas between two flat panels to excite phosphors and create light
Types of Display
Light Emitting Diode (LED) utilize LEDs to provide the backlight for the
display rather than the fluorescent light used in traditional LCDs.
Electronic Paper uses pixels made of particles or oils that
reflect light to resemble the pages of a book.
Printers
provides a specific type of computer output on paper or three-dimensional output in plastic.
The different types of printers are Laser Ink-jet Photo Multifunction Plotters 3D Printers
Audio and Special Media Output
Provide output to senses other than sight.
Sound is used by the computer operating system and other software to make the user aware of certain events.
Expansion
Computer’s capacity to interface with external devices by connecting through ports, slots, and wireless technologies.
Expansion allows computer users to enjoy benefits beyond those provided by the computer alone.
Examples of Expansion
Scanners
Webcams
Keyboards
