LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE

Page 2: Layers of the atmosphere mini lesson

TROPOSPHERE

• The troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere

• It is the site of all weather on Earth

• The troposphere contains 75% of the atmosphere’s mass

• It contains 99% of the water vapor in the atmosphere

• The troposphere begins at Earth’s surface and spans a distance of 4 to 12 miles (7 to 20 km)

STRATOSPHERE

• The stratosphere is the layer in which the ozone layer is found

• It is almost completely free of clouds and other forms of weather

• The stratosphere extends from the top of the troposphere to about 32 miles (50 km; 170,000 ft)

MESOSPHERE

• The mesosphere is the coldest of the atmospheric layers

• This is also the layer in which a lot of meteors burn up while entering Earth’s atmosphere, which are seen from Earth as shooting stars

• The mesosphere extends from the top of the stratosphere to the range of 50 to 53 miles (80 to 85 km; 260,000 to 280,000 ft)

Ionosphere

• The ionosphere is the layer of the atmosphere located in the thermosphere

• This layer is located between the mesosphere and the exosphere

• It extends from about 50 miles above Earth’s surface to around 250 miles (80 to 400 km)

Exosphere

• The exosphere is the outermost layer of the atmosphere

• It is located within the thermosphere, which also contains the ionosphere

• The exosphere extends from about 250 miles outward for thousands of miles (400 km)

THERMOSPHERE

Answers:1. A- the stratosphere2. C, d, or h- the exosphere and/or thermosphere

(because they both go on forever)(for all we humans know)
