2. LXDE

  • Most Open Source projects started in Europe.
  • LXDE is one of the first Open Source projects from Taiwan, that developed into a global project and is supported by a growing community.
  • Key developers of LXDE come from Taiwan.
  • It is an opportunity for Taiwanese companies to work together easily with world class developers.

3. What is LXDE

  • LXDE: short for Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment
  • LX: also Linux
  • LXDE is especially designed for new generation devices like netbooks and small computers.
  • LXDE is an energy savy and extremely fast and performing desktop solution.

4. LXDE

  • needs
  • less RAM
  • less CPU
  • less disk space
  • offers
  • a full featured desktop solution
  • multilanguage support

5. What is LXDEsystems

  • LXDEsystems is the international European based company which owns and sponsors LXDE.
  • LXDEsystems holds the copyright to most of the codebase of LXDE.
  • LXDE is available under terms of the GNU General Public License, as well as under a variety of proprietary agreements.

6. LXDE Components

  • Each component of LXDE can run independently
  • PCManFM, LXSession / LXSession_Lite, LXAppearance, GPicView, Leafpad, LXTerminal, Xarchiver, LXNM

7. PCManFM

  • PCManFM
  • The ultimate fast and robust file manager.
  • It provides tabbed-browsing and desktop icons with low system resource usage

8.

    • The ultimate lightweight and feature-rich file manager with tabs and volume-management support

9.

    • The file manager can use totally different layout, if you like

10. LXPanel

  • Feature-rich yet user-friendly desktop panel
  • providing most crucial functions you expect from a desktop panel.
  • Configuration is done through GUI

11.

    • The panel can generate menu for installed applications automatically from *.desktop files

12.

    • The panel can be configured from GUI preference dialog, and there is no need to edit config files

13.

    • It provides a "Run" dialog with autocompletion

14. LXDE Components

  • LXSession / LXSession_Lite: Standard-compliant X11 session manager with shutdown/reboot/suspend supports via HAL and gdm (LXSession Lite is a stripped-down lightweight version without X11 session management support, and it's more stable)
  • LXAppearance: LXAppearance is a new feature-rich GTK+ theme switcher able to change GTK+ themes, icon themes, and fonts used by applications

15.

    • You can change the theme, icons, and fonts used by applications easily.

16. LXDE Components

  • Openbox: Lightweight, standard-compliant, and highly-configurable window manager (This is not developed by us, but we use it as our default window manager). This can be replaced by any other window manager like icewm, fluxbox, metacity, ...etc.
  • GPicView: A very simple, fast, and lightweight image viewer featuring immediate startup.

17.

    • The default image viewer - GPicview features lightening fast startup and intuitive interface

18. LXDE Components

  • Leafpad: Lightweight and simple text editor (This is not developed by us, but we suggest using this as default text editor).
  • LXTerminal: Desktop-independent VTE-based terminal emulator for LXDE without any unnecessary dependency (All instances share the same process to reduce memory usage)
  • LXTask: LX task manager / system monitor

19.

    • Lightweight task manager / system monitor.

20. LXDE Components

  • XArchiver: Lightweight, fast, and desktop-independent gtk+-based file archiver (This is not developed by us, but we suggest using this as default archiver).
  • LXNM (still under development): Lightweight network connection helper daemon for LXDE supporting wireless connections (Linux-only)

21. Which distributions use LXDE

  • PUD GNU/Linux: Ubuntu-based installable live cd with LXDE
  • TinyMe: PCLinuxOS-based tiny distro using some components of LXDE
  • Slitaz: Extremely small live cd using most of the components of LXDE
  • Greenie: Ubuntu-based OS with LXDE and GNOME desktop enviroments

22. Which distributions use LXDE

  • Ubuntulite: Member of Ubuntu Derivatives featuring LXDE
  • Vectorlinux LITE: VectorLinux LITE edition
  • Myah OS 3.0 Box edition: LXDE flavor of Myah OS
  • gOS3, commercial flavor of LXDE with Google Gadgets

23. Why LXDE

  • There are already numerous good Linux desktop environments like KDE, GNOME, XFCE on the market.
  • None of these is adapted and customized for the smaller low cost devices as LXDE.

24. International Development

  • LXDE involves people from several countries in Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, India)
  • in Europe (Germany, Italy, France)
  • in North America (US)
  • Because of this diverse background of developers, multi-language support has always been a key feature of LXDE.

25. LXDE is Green

  • LXDE saves energy.
  • LXDE prolongs the life cycle of hardware. Older Hardware can be used longer.

26. How does LXDE do the magic

  • 1. LXDE team submitted patches to GTK+2.6+ toolkit.
  • 2. GTK is commonly used in many Gnu/Linux distributions and allows applications to run on different plattforms.
  • 3. LXDE optimizes functions of GTK for faster performance.
  • 4. LXDE applications are extensively tested and tweaked to increase performance.

27. Using gtk an advantage

  • By using GTK applications running on distributions using GTK, like Debian or Ubuntu, can be installed in a system using the LX desktop environment.
