The 5 steps to mapping

• Collect data

Data is anything required to make a map: street paths, street names, photos, older maps etc.

1. Collect data

• Create a free account on www.openstreetmap.org (OSM)

• Convert GPS data from logger to gpx format (use the free gpsbabel app. for Win/Mac/Linux) The GeoChron GPS logs

are in the NMEA 0183 format, which gpsbabel can convert to gpx. Download the gpsbabel app. from: http://www.gpsbabel.org

2. Upload data

• Create a free account on www.openstreetmap.org (OSM)

• Convert GPS data from logger to gpx format (use the free gpsbabel app. for Win/Mac/Linux)

• Upload gpx files to OSM with proper tags e.g. “Multan Pakistan” and permissions e.g. “Public”

3. Create/Edit data• Use your GPS tracks or imagery as a

guide in OSM

• Create a node for a location or a point

• Create a path by joining many nodes

• Create an area or region by making a closed path More information on

4. Label data & add details

• A node may be a town name or the location of a traffic light

• A path may be marked as a road with a direction or a river with a name etc.

• An enclosed region or area may be a park or a hospital building More information about

which tags to use are on the OSM wiki pages.

5. Render & use map

• The OSM map automatically gets updated every 1 week (so wait for your changes)

• Export a map image for your own use

• Put the map in your website

• Use the data to create something new

The problem :-(

• Map data is just not available

• Mapping data is not free

• Available data is full of mistakes which cannot be corrected

• Data is very car-centric

• Data cannot be reused or printed

• Environment changes too fast

Open source solution :-)• Wikipedia style collaboration to create

• Free and open content

• By users mapping around where they live or travel

• Or by users that promote it to others

• Or by users that convince businesses and governments to donate data or resources

• Limited by number of GPS trackers, power supply and internet connectivity

• Teams of volunteers can do each of the 5 tasks independently

• Don’t forget to take notes while mapping
