生物可分解材料 (Biodegradable Materials) ，一般以可不斷重複取得的天然資源，如微生物、植物、動物，所製成的一種聚合物。傳統的塑膠材料不能被微生物分解成水和 CO2 ，如： PE 、 PVC 、 PS 、 PP… 等。生物可分解材料曝露在空氣中時，並不會進行分解，但在有足夠的溼度、氧氣與適當的微生物存在的自然掩埋或堆肥環境中，可被微生物所分解。

生物可分解材料定義 ( 抑制地球持續被破壞 )

優點：(A) 材料天然、無毒 , 無塑化劑 , 無重金屬疑慮 , 可食品接觸(B) 使用任何廢棄物處理方式﹙如焚化、掩埋、回收、堆肥﹚皆不致對環境造成任何衝擊。(C) 具有類似傳統塑膠製品之物性，使用方法相同。(D) 丟棄後，經由堆肥或掩埋即可完全分解。
