Aim of the Project
To improve waste management practices of clinical laboratory in university and Ismailia general hospitals.

• To describe waste management practices of clinical laboratory in university and Ismailia general hospitals and the international standards.
• To identify occupational hazards caused by exposure to waste products in clinical laboratory
• To identify the international standards of waste management practices to provide ideas for improving the practices in clinical laboratory of university and Ismailia general

Laboratory waste consisting of sharps: syringes, needles, disposable scalpels and blades. Infectious waste: is material suspected to contain pathogens (bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi) in sufficient concentration or quantity to cause disease in susceptible hosts. This category includes: waste contaminated with blood or other body fluids, cultures and stocks of infectious agents from laboratory work, waste from infected patients in isolation wards. Waste contaminated with blood or other body fluids include free-flowing blood, blood components and other body fluids; dressings, bandages, swabs, gloves, masks, gowns, drapes and other material contaminated with blood or other body fluids; Laboratory cultures and stocks are highly infectious waste.

SUBJECTS and METHODS TYPE OF STUDY: Cross sectional study will be conducted. SETTING:•Clinical laboratory in university and Ismailia general hospitals. TARGET POPULATION:•Housekeeping workers and nurses of clinical laboratory in university and Ismailia general hospitals.
INCLUSION CRITERA:all housekeeping workers and nurses in university and Ismailia general hospitals.
SAMPLE SIZE: 28 workers TOOLS:Interview questionnaire.

• In our study , we found that 60.7 of workers received laboratory safety training, 25% of workers said that food and
• drinks are not permitted in the laboratory, 78.6% of workers are familiar with the use of fire extinguishers, 7.1% of

Results• Table (5): Laboratory equipment is clearly labeled for
biological hazard, toxic risk, etc.
The table above shows that 39.3% of workers said that Laboratory equipment is clearly labeled for biological hazard, toxic risk, etc. while 60.7% said that laboratory is not clearly labeled.

Results• Graph (2): Containers for sharp and cutting waste are properly handled and
disposed
• The graph above shows that 14.3% of workers said that Containers for sharp and cutting waste are properly handled and disposed while 85.7% of them said that Containers for sharp and cutting waste are not properly handled and disposed.

RECOMMENDATIONSIn the laboratory ,the safety measures must be available as it
always makes the laboratory technicians and doctors are more safe from chemical , biological , physical hazards and it also makes no other factors interfere with the quality of service and quality of analysis needed in these Laboratories
It is recommended that there must be labels for everything in the laboratory , Gloves , smocks , ear wears and suits in the laboratory are available , and must be always worn . Fire extinguishers must be also available and there are people who are trained before to use it and the people in the laboratory should be trained how to act in different emergency situations .

RECOMMENDATIONS• The laboratories must have emergency exits in the case
of any situation, the workers in the laboratories should wash their hands before and after working , Also there must be effective data saving way in which the information is available any time.
• Finally Wastes must be segregated and collected in suitable containers. Chemical waste containers must be identifiable, labeled, dated, and sealed , and then being properly handled and stored and disposed , Containers for sharp and cutting waste must be properly handled and disposed .
