Microsoft Disk Operating was originally developed in 1980 for personal computers using 8086/8088 family of processor chip(CPU).The need of users ,the requirement of application programs and hardware capabilities have all changed since the first release of MS DOS .In order to maintain DOS as a viable operating system, new operating system, new releases are made periodically.

Major versions are signified by the number before the decimal point (eg.401).Minor changes are signified by increasing the number after decimal point. For the most part ,these minor changes are not noticeable .The DOS programs are considered obsolete the moment to a new release is announced ,sales of the old version are discontinued and users are offered an upgraded version. This is not necessarily true with system programs like DOS.However earlier releases are often sold and supported for some time after the new version is introduced. This is because the earlier version still has all the capabilities required by some users and new versions are always downward compatible.
