What Is World Wind?
• World Wind, the 2009 NASA SoFware of the Year, is NASA’s open source virtual globe technology for spa$al data.
• World Wind is based on open standards, i.e., OGC WMS, and can be configured to accommodate any desired data format.
• World Wind is freely u$lized by the world’s space agencies, local and na$onal governments agencies, commercial industry, including Fortune 100 companies, and others.

Why World Wind Europa Challenge?
• World Wind 3D visualiza$on technology gives any applica.on a virtual globe world for building any func$onality needed to express, manipulate or analyze spa$al data.
• World Wind, as open source technology, enhances compe$$on and innova$on, to accelerate development of solu.ons.
• World Wind increases social and economic benefit for the world, similar to other ‘open’ data exchange standards, i.e., TCP/IP, WMS, GPS, etc.

World Wind Europa Challenge • Welcome to the first year for the annual Europa Challenge!
• The challenge is for the European university and small business community to build open source applica$ons based on NASA’s open source virtual globe technology, World Wind.
• Sustainability is a key element for this enterprise:
– Applica$ons must serve real needs of Europe, based on INSPIRE.
– Applica$ons must be open source.

World Wind Europa Challenge • Server side: uses any WMS-‐compliant server, i.e., MapServer
GeoServer, ESRI, etc.
• Client/User side: the Europa Challenge will provide a growing number of applica$ons serving the European community and encourage shared knowledge throughout the user community.
• “For the benefit of all”: In the spirit of NASA’s mo[o, this challenge will bridge common interests between local, regional and na$onal governments, academia, research and the business community.

World Wind Europa Challenge h[p://eurochallenge.como.polimi.it
• This annual event will inspire and challenge Europe's best and brightest for geospa$al solu$ons that serve the needs of Europe.
• The Europa Challenge was designed by the NASA World Wind Summer School program at Politecnico di Milano in Como, a[ended by ~50 students, mentors and NASA, as well as the JRC Digital Earth Unit and representa$ves from the interna$onal and business communi$es.

World Wind Europa Challenge There are two ways to win the Europa Challenge:
– University Team Project
– Professional Team Project
Each project team needs to decide, design and build a geospa$al applica$on that serves the European community and aligns with INSPIRE criteria for Europe.

INSPIRE (refresher) Infrastructure for Spa=al Informa=on in Europe
• The INSPIRE Direc$ve intends to increase access to the spa$al informa$on necessary to support na$onal and Community environmental policy, and policies affec$ng the environment.
• INSPIRE is being developed under the technical coordina$on of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission
• An INSPIRE key element is addressed by the World Wind Europa Challenge:
– Technical specifica$ons to develop interoperable services and allow discovery, view, transforma$on and download of informa$on resources

World Wind Europa Challenge University Team Project
• Build an applica$on that serves the INSPIRE Direc$ve and uses NASA's open source virtual globe technology, World Wind. To do this it must establish a team of three to five students, from a single university, with any mix of undergraduate, graduate and PhD students. Each team must have a mentor.
• The mentor can be a professor, an associate or assistant professor, or an official lecturer at the same university as the team. Together they decide, design and build a geospa$al applica$on that serves local, regional, na$onal or interna$onal interests guided by the INSPIRE Direc$ve.
• We welcome the UN University in Bonn!

World Wind Europa Challenge Professional Team Project
• Small businesses can compete in the professional category with the same criteria as in the University project category, only there is no limit on team members or any mentor requirement.
• This is a great opportunity for a company to showcase its talents, while providing premier value to the European community.

World Wind Europa Challenge WWEC Relevance in the EDF Context
• To manage the en$re world of BIG data and solu$ons to be sustainable, the work ahead must collabora.vely address common geospa.al issues.
• World Wind technology provides the ideal plajorm for collabora$ve work to develop increasingly more sophis$cated tools to manage and analyse spa$al data for easier sharing and smart decision-‐making.

World Wind Europa Challenge Recent developments
On February 25 a Skype session with Fausto Fra$celli of the UN Spa$al Data Infrastructure (UNSDI) Office in Geneva and NASA World Wind Europa Challenge organisers, P. Hogan NASA ARC, Prof. M. Brovelli (Politecnico di Milano), R. De Amicis (Graphitech) and G.Remetey (HUNAGI) on specifica$ons and expecta$ons. Also, dialogue with EUROGI has begun along with an invita$on to join the Europa Challenge.
