The traditional market

If the market won’t change, how is the UK to compete?

• “Every shop’s a patisserie”– Most ISP’s resell BT Wholesale offerings– Marginal investment– Little scope for technical innovation

• Those that do invest, do so in the same places

– Typically along with cable & WiMAX operators

– Expectations of market share must be small

• Most differentiate on price alone– Ever eroding margins– Ever shrinking funds to invest in the future

• 1 market-place

• 1 set of interface specifications

• 1 set of tradable assets

• No controlling interests

• Enough hubs to make it affordable for local projects

• Sufficiently few hubs to make it economic for service providers

• Meeting place for

– Peering (e.g. Level 3)

– Backbone connectivity (e.g. Geo)

– Managed platforms (e.g. C&W)

Together it forms a Joint Operating Network
