Fahrenheit Scale

A temperature scale used almost exclusively in the United States based on what the human body’s temperature was thought to be ~ 100o (98.7o

F) Water freezes at 32o F Water boils at 212oF

Celsius Scale

A scientific scale for recording temperature that focuses on the freezing point of water (0o) and the boiling point of water (100o) at sea level

Called Centigrade for its 100 graduations

Kelvin Scale

A scientific scale for recording temperature based on the point where there is no molecular movement. It starts from absolute zero or -273

oC it increases by the same size degree

increments as the Celsius scale.

Page 7: Notes yb 01 temperature scales

Absolute Zero

The Kelvin temperature (-273o C) when all molecular motion stops.

Conversions:

To convert from Celsius to Kelvin add 273 degrees to the Celsius temperature 0o C + 273 = 273 K

To convert Kelvin to Celsius, subtract 273 from the Kelvin temperature. 373K - 273= 100 o C
