Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube are exploding in popularity and our students are using them. Do you want to join in? The presenters discuss tips and tactics needed to interact using these tools. This session features a big-picture perspective, as well as the individual steps necessary to get started.

TinyurlA service that shortens URLs so they take up fewer characters in a tweet.
– (Twitter automatically shortens your links to TinyURLs if they’re too long.)
Alternatives to TinyURL becoming
popular. – Bit.ly – Shorter, & gives stats.– Is.gd – Very short links.– SnipURL (snurl.com)– simliar to TinyURL.

Sometimes Twitter saturates. Wait 10 seconds or so and it usually goes away!

• twestival – a charity event promoted via Twitter

1. Talk first, follow later
2. Start with friends, expand slowly
3. Don’t bother going “private”
4. Post consistently and you’ll get it.

How do you find people to follow?1. Find People by name on Twitter.2. Find people using keywords, location, interests, etc.3. Find people on other networks (Gmail, Yahoo,

• and a (brief) conversational tool to appropriately respond to relevant inquiries and follow-up questions or comments.

Broadcaster • useful if audience
knows what they are getting
• another way to push information
• works best if you have good information to give
• could fill a need from specific area or topic
Conversationalist• provides a "voice" seen as an authority and source •ROE - return on engagement a way to interact with those interested in topic
