“In 2015, there was a 57.7 percent increase in adults (18 and over) in the U.S.that use wearable technology to 39.5 million. That growth will continue, with a

projected 81.7 million adults using wearables by 2018.” – eMarketer [1]

2

“Five percent of human-resource professionals report that their companies require them to do online research about candidates, using social networking

websites to scrutinize applicants” – Rosen [2]

INTRODUCTIONPhoto: cc: Unsplash

In the growing age of wearable technology and digital presence, people have shifted towards developing exaggerated online personas rather than what they

are truly passionate about or impressing people in real life.

4DIGITAL SYNC

Society has become addicted to constantly checking social media for updates, creating self-esteem issues and increased judgemental opinions of virtually

everything seen on social media. [3][4]

5

Future predictions indicate even more technological synchronization, meaning it will eventually be impossible to avoid social networks. This will cause users to be

chained to their social profiles forever. [5]

6

Thus the focus will shift towards impressing people on social media rather than in real life. The evolution of job hunting, career planning, and education are

dependent on the perception of user social media profiles. [6]

7CHALLENGES

A study has shown that about 75% of people on social media lie in order to make their lives seem more interesting. [7] Therefore, people should not be so swiftly

judged based off of their social media profiles.

Online vs. Reality

8

Individuals are beginning to only do things to make their online presence appear more exceptional than in reality. This leads to initiatives that said individuals

undertake to be done without as much care or diligence.

9

“Clicktivism” – “the use of social media and other online methods to promote a cause.” [8] However there have been many cases where ‘clicktivism’ is simply

used as a tool to promote traffic to user social media profiles.

“Of the 70% who said they used digital media to learn about changes they can make in their lives to create positive social or environmental change, only 25%

made changes.” [9]

#Kony2012 took 2012 by storm as a documentary depicting the struggles in Uganda generated 112 million views one week after it went live. [10] Yet one year

later in the Spring of 2013, officials suspended the manhunt entirely. [11]

12CLICKTIVISM

Due to social media creating low self esteem in people, they crave attention through the likes, follows, and shares that their ‘clicktivism’ posts receive;

however effectively no real change is able to occur.

“The obsession with external recognition is now entering our professional lives.” People measure success off of meaningless social media metrics as opposed to

real results. [12] Social Media has created a misallocation of time and focus.

Reputations precede users, leading to less modesty as users actively have to divulge personal information, in order to prove authenticity; creating pressure for

new titles/positions regardless of the passion or validity of said positions. [13]

In a decade’s time, wearable technology will be flawlessly integrated in everyday life as online profiles will become more valuable than real identities; simply put,

online is the new real world. [14]
