MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE, AND RANGE
Section 1.6
Measures of Central Tendency
The mean of a data set is the sum of the values divided by the number of values.
Minimum monthly temperatures (C) for Big Delta, Alaska.-24, -21, -17, -7, 3, 8, 11, 8, 2, -8, -18,
-23
What is the mean of the data set?-7.17
Measures of Central Tendency
The median of a data set is the middle value when the values are written in numerical order. If a data set has an even number of values, the median is the mean of the two middle values.
Minimum monthly temperatures (C) for Big Delta, Alaska.
-24, -21, -17, -7, 3, 8, 11, 8, 2, -8, -18, -23
What is the median of the data set?-24, -23, -21, -18, -17, -8, -7, 2, 3, 8, 8, 11

Measures of Central Tendency
The mode of a data set is the value that occurs most often. A data set can have no mode, one mode, or more than one mode.
Minimum monthly temperatures (C) for Big Delta, Alaska.-24, -21, -17, -7, 3, 8, 11, 8, 2, -8, -18, -

What is the mode of the data?8
A Measure of Dispersion
The range of a data set is the difference of the greatest value and the least value.
Minimum monthly temperatures (C) for Big Delta, Alaska.
-24, -21, -17, -7, 3, 8, 11, 8, 2, -8, -18, -23
What is the range of the data set?11 – (-24) = 350 C
Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
Here are some scores from a card game:154, 113, 172, 161, 145
Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set.
Mean = 149 Median = 154Mode = no mode Range = 59
If the scores were doubled, what would happen to the mean, median, mode, and range? They would all double.
