1. Introduction

On the year of 2033, there are reasons because the “X” city was not safety

anymore and can’t live by anyone. I as the mayor of “X” city should be the

one who responsible to find out the problem that occurred to my “X” city.

After finding out the problem that attacks my city, I should start finding ways

to do problem solving. By solving the problem, I should be thinking how my

citizen in my city should keep on their life.

After thinking about city planning, I should do investigation and research of

the cities that present or in the past or the future planning of other country. By

using their useful information and elements to help and improve “X” city.

Later I get inspired by looking at my house, I just need to build a house for my

city, and it will solve most of the problems. Due to my city looks like a half-

sphere so I call it as half-sphere city.

2. The City

2.2)Brief of History City planning as an organized profession that existed for less than a century.

All cities display various degrees of consideration and cognizant design in

their plan and functioning.

Between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago, systematic agriculture of plants and the

domestication of animals allowed for more permanent settlements.

Cities serve as centers of storage, trade, invent.

Cities can be founded at the intersections of transportation routes, or at the

points where goods must shift from one mode of transportation to another, as

at river and ocean ports.

Ancient cities usually had large temple grounds with monumental religious

buildings.

Provide protection in a precarious world.

Cities serve as centers of government.

Cities provide a fertile ground for the evolution of human culture.

Cities serve as centers of communication.

2.3)What makes a city? Cities must match to the landscape in which they are located.

City form is influence by climate, example: arcades designed to shield

pedestrians from sun and rain.

Architecture of the individual buildings often reflects adaptation to

temperature, rainfall, wind, snow or other climatic characteristic.

Cities must have a healthy water supply, location along rivers and streams, or

near underground watercourse.

City location and internal structure influenced by natural transportation routes.

City has to survive periodic natural disaster.

2.4)What makes a good city? According to Lynch five dimensions of city performance:

- Vitality: Successfully fulfills the biological needs of its inhabitants and provides

safety environment for their activities.

- Sense: Organized city so that residents can recognize and understand the

city’s form and function.

-Fit : Provides the buildings, spaces, and networks required for its residents

to trail their project successfully.

-Access: Allow people of all ages and background are easily to reached the

city and gain the activities, resources, services, and information.

-Control: Citizens of the good control arranged city enjoy works and live in

the the management of the spaces they are of the city.

City distributes benefits among its citizens according to some average, least

cost, balances the achievement of goals with one another.

2.5)Elements of city structure Network

-Contains an amazing arrangement of pathways to carry flows of people,

goods, water, energy, and information.

-Most ancient cities rely on streets, most of them quite narrow by modern

standards, to carry foot traffic and carts.

-Modern city rely on complex networks of utilities so small town is not a major

problem in water obtaining and waste disposing but big town different and

need a lot of expensive pathway such as rail network.

-To solve problems for big town, it should require enough drain system and

water systems to handle high populations and high densities of people in the

big town.

Buildings

-Most visible elements in the city.

-Features that give each city a unique character.

-Residential structure: Single-family home to dense high-rise apartment.

-Commercial buildings: Skyscrapers, low-rise structure

-Industrial buildings: Large factory, small workshops

-Constant search for the proper arrangement of these different types of:

1. Land use

2. Paying particular attention to compatibility of different activities

3. Population densities

4. Traffic generation

5. Economic efficiency

6. Social relationships

7. The height and bulk of buildings

Open space

-Treat as surplus

-Contributes greatly to the quality of city life.

-“Hard” Space: plazas, malls

-“Soft” Space: park, gardens

-“Hard” Space provide setting for public activities

-“Soft” Space provide or serve as space for recreational activities.

What is future city?

-Definition: Create a world leading “Future City” through sloping technologies,

schemes and services according to our capability.

-“Compact townships” very important and needed for a future city.

-3 important value for future city and able to explain what is”compact

townships”

1. Environment – waste management, water supply, atmosphere, less

carbon

2. Social - Health care, nursing, culture, security, social investment

3. Economic -Stable employment, stable income, tourism, more

urbanization

3. Investigation & Data Collection:

Ancient Cities

3.1)Egypt: Aswan High Dam

Concentrating:

Water Reservoir

Introduction:

A third largest water reservoir that finished its construction on year 1970 after

10 years works. This water reservoir located at the north border between

Egypt and Sudan, it lies on the world second largest river---River Nile’s. The

main reason for Egyptians to build this dam is to get water supply and prevent

flooding.

History:

Before the whole Aswan dam was built, the first Aswan dam--- Aswan Low

Dam was constructed under the direction of Sir William Wilcocks. However, it

only provide valuable irrigation during drought but still can’t solve the

flooding problem happened annually. So, the Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel

Nasser find help from United state and Britain for funding help but they quit

funding and withdraw the funding on July 1956. Finally, the Soviet Union

appeared and help them in funding problems. Construction was then started

in 1960.

Benefits:

Annual flooding problem solve by draining the water into the sea wastefully.

More water supply for agriculture yield.

Improve navigation across the Nile.

Provide enough energy power.

Helps to store water during drought.

Conclusion:

Water reservoir helps out a lot in Egypt. It improves its tourism and fishing

industry due to the navigation across Nile was clear by regulating the flow of

water. Water are never gone and increase agriculture yield, improve grow

rate.

Useful information to my future city:

Use water reservoir to store water and get water supply. Water reservoir also

helps a lot in my future city because my future city facing climate problem,

facing drought unstably. By using water reservoir not only provide enough

water for the people in my city, it also provide water for agriculture in my

future city.

3.2)The round city

Baghdad

Concentrating:

Geometric Shape of the city

Introduction:

According to the latest statistic in 2011 AD, there are almost 7,216,040

populations of people in Baghdad and it makes it the second largest city in

Arab. Baghdad is the capital city of the Republic of Iraq. Baghdad, it’s name

derives from the Persian Bag-dad, which means “God- given” and it

translation mean “Garden of God”. It was also named “Round City”

History:

Baghdad was built from 762 AD to 764 AD by Abbasid caliph al-Mansur in the

sixth decade of the eighth century AD. Baghdad was considered as the

capital of the Abbasid Empire. This made Baghdad become a prominent

place under their rule.

Significance:

Availability of water

Decrease of the dangers of flooding

Increase influence to contact across the Tigris by bridge

Four main paths that from west, east, north and south connect to the

middle.

Provided its inhabitants with a plentiful supply of water

Conclusion:

The geometric shape of Baghdad city----round shape is special and was the

only ancient city with round shape. The four main paths that utilize the 2 major

rivers (Tigris and Euphrates) enabled them to control trading routes and also

produce plenty of water supplies from the river.

Useful information:

The geometric shape of Baghdad city is suitable to input to my city due to my

city is creating a big half round shape of glass that contains the same effect

with ozone layer of the atmosphere. By using round shape, it will never

happen critical angle of the sunlight occurred and hurt my future city. The

four main paths also useful for my future city. It connects directly to the main

building of my future city.

Present Cities

4.1)Barcelona

Concentrating:

Pattern of the city

Walk ability

Introduction:

Barcelona is situated on a plateau on the Mediterranean Sea, the largest city

in Catalonia and famous for its mild, sunny climate. International flair, mild

weather, and the beach that only a few metro stops away allow foreigners to

understand the route easily and so it attracts lots of foreigner.

History:

Barcelona was found by Phoenicians and Carthaginians, it’s original name

was Barcino. The Romans arrived on the 1st century B.C. and chose it as

capital of region. After that, during the 8th century, Barcinona was occupied

by Moors. After 100 years, Frank conquered back the city and the Spanish

Reconquest began in this zone and known as the Spanish Marches.

Significance:

Octagonal pattern of city provide a special view and better walk

ability.

Lack of tall buildings contributes a beautiful sunny district.

Symmetrical design provides wide streets, rounded corners and lush

vegetation.

Useful Information:

Octagonal pattern of city can be used in my future city because it looks more

systematic of my city. The symmetrical design provides wide streets also useful

to my city. It allows my city won’t feel to pack and high walk ability.

5. Investigation & Data Collection:

Future Cities

5.1)Abu Dhabi

Concentrating:

Solar system (Energy supply)

Introduction:

Abu Dhabi future planning was use to meeting in the Abu Dhabi Urban

Planning Council that was created by Emiri Decree number 23 of the year

2007 and its agency responsible for the future of Abu Dhabi Urban

environment.

When did it start?

Emiri Decree from Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council plan to have a future

plan since year 2006. The main objective for this future planning is to be a

global hub for clean technology education, research, development and

production, also to create a carbon-neutral city.

Specialty:

Using renewable source such as solar system to get energy and save

cost, environment friendly.

Photovoltaic arrays provide green energy that is pollution free.

Photovoltaic arrays are cheap to install

They just need a minimal maintenance so as to remain in operation

The solar energy generated and so it eliminates transmission and

infrastructure cost.

Useful Information:

I can use photovoltaic arrays to my future city. This solar panel benefits a lot

because it not only environment friendly, it also cheap in cost and installation.

6. The “X” City

The “X” city is a city that located in Sabah, Malaysia. In this city, there are 3 main

races that live peacefully and harmony together and there are Chinese, Malay and

Indian. Sabah is a place that has strong and warm sun, so it was comfortable living

there. Besides that, people there are friendly to everyone even to those foreigners.

Sabah also full with tropical forest and underground contains a lot of petroleum that

brings a lot of benefits to the city.

People there are having lots kind of work such as mechanic, waiter, businessman,

etc. They all have balanced economic income.

However, in the year of 2033, the climate changes terribly there. Drought, hail, heavy

rain and tornado always attack to the city. As a mayor of the city, I have to plan a

perfect plan to protect my citizen. In the meanwhile, I have to do lots of research

about other country’s city to make sure my city goes perfectly.

7. The New “X” City / The New NAME?

Half-sphere city

I enhance my “X” city using a big glass of shield to protect all citizen inside. It

was a normal concept of a house. As a house can protect us from lots of

disaster , house are known as the safety place, so based on this I use to make

a house for the city so make the city feel it get into the house and been

protected.

Why is it round?

To reflect reduce the concentration of UV light ray, and it’s function is similar

to ozone layer of atmosphere.

What is the important?

Power supply: solar system produce electricity

Bicycle as transportation: carbon-free city

Four main path: Easy to access everywhere

Water supply: water reservoir

Tourism: the main garden in the middle

Maintenance building: To do repair when the roof of the city is

damaged

Food: Agriculture farm

Conclusion

This perfectly helps my citizens from getting hurt by the disaster. It also

protects all object in the city. No need to worry about food and water

because all the facilities inside the city is enough supply for every citizen to

live.

9. Conclusion

In the end of the project, a city can’t be planned without any experiences or

research because we can’t predict what will happen to our city. Sketching out

the plan of the city to show details and all facilities can be provided so can do

some discussion. Discussion also very important due to every person has different

kind of thinking. Combining and filter the discussion objective may come out a

better city.

Besides that, pollution is very dangerous and serious problem in each city. So

before building a city, the first problem should think about pollution so that

everyone in the city are able to live peace and healthy.
