Dia menyusun unsur-unsur berdasarkan kenaikan massa atom relatifnya. Ternyata unsur-unsur yang berselisih 1 oktaf ( unsur nomor 1 dengan nomor 8, nomor 2 dengan nomor 9, dan seterusnya ) menunjukkan kemiripan sifat.
