Independent tests show for every 400 litres of diesel and petrol burned in a combustion engine produces an incredible:

• 3.2 kilos of sulphur

• 1 kilo of soot

• 1 kilo of resins and varnishes

Engine manufacturer Caterpillar say 90% of engine wear is caused by acid action, not friction.

This is a simplified diagram of a fuel injection system. The fuel contains hydrocarbons, sulphur and water. In the combustion process, these elements can combine to form Sulphurous and Sulphuric Acids.

During combustion, unburned fuel or incompletely burned fuel forms carbon. This can deposit in the combustion chamber or exit with the exhaust gases as black smoke.

This carbon also blocks fuel injectors, resulting in a loss of engine power and fuel efficiency.
