What is Laptop Computer?

A Laptop Computer is a computer that integrates all the elements that needs to run properly, including a battery power supply, a screen and a keyboard, in a small casing.(on average 360 cm x 40 cm x 270 cm)

The First of Laptop Computer

Osborne was known to frequent the famous Homebrew Computer Club’s meetings around 1975. He was best known for creating the first commercially available portable computer.

The Osborne 1 came with a five-inch screen, modem port, two 5¼ floppy drives, a large collection of bundled software programs, and a battery pack. The short-lived computer company was never successful.

History of Laptop Computer

• Released in 1981, was the Epson HX-20, a battery powered portable computer, with a 20-character by 4 line LCD display and a built-in printer.

• In January of 1982, Microsoft's Kazuhiko Nishi and Bill Gates begin discussions on designing a portable computer, based on using a new liquid crystal display or LCD screen.

• In September 1989, Apple Computer released the first Macintosh Portable that later evolved into the Power Book.

• In October 1989, Compaq Computer released its first notebook PC, the Compaq LTE.

• In 1992, Intel and Microsoft release APM or the Advanced Power Management specification for laptop computers.

Understanding Laptop PC Size/Weight

• Size – The size of the laptop refers to the base systems external physical dimensions. Of course there are other items beyond the unit itself that need to be carried as well, so this should be taken into consideration as well when looking at the computers.

• Weight - The weight of a laptop is what tends to directly impact the portability of a computer. The dimensions may determine what type of bag the computer will fit into when it is being carried but the weight is what physically impacts us the most when we carry them around.

How Laptops Work

In a way, the skyrocketing popularity of laptop computers is ironic. They're completely portable, and they use less power and make less noise than desktop models. But, they're often a little slower and have less graphics and Sound processing power, although these differences can be too small for most users to notice.

Laptops are also more expensive than desktops. The price gap is closing, though -- laptop prices are falling faster than desktop prices, and laptop PCs actually outsold desktop models for the first time in May of 2005 [Source: Windows IT Pro].

A laptop's memory can make up for some of the reduced performance that comes from a slower processor. Some laptops have cache memory on or very near the CPU, allowing it to access data more quickly. Some also have larger busses, allowing data to move between the processor, motherboard and memory more quickly.
