MSA1000 firmware for LINUX and NetWare finally available

brief support notes

Process Software provides networking solutions for mission-critical business environments.

MultiNet is a TCP/IP solution that provides a reliable backbone for mission-critical applications running on the HP OpenVMS operating system.

PMDF MessageStore for OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX is a standards-based Internet messaging product suite that ensures efficient and secure communications.

SSH for OpenVMS is a Secure Shell (SSH) networking extension that protects HP AlphaServer systems running the OpenVMS operating system.

TCPware is a networking solution for the HP OpenVMS operating system that turns an HP AlphaServer system into a powerful application server to support multiplatform environments.

Partners provided updates to these OpenVMS solutions: ELOS is a turnkey gaming and lottery system that supports traditional

online terminals, as well as advanced technologies for betting via the Internet, mobile telephones, and interactive TV.

UNIFACE is a complete, feature-rich rapid application development (RAD) environment and deployment architecture that enables organizations to greatly accelerate the deployment of new functionality and services.

OnExchange Extensible Clearing System is an integrated real-time clearing solution for derivatives clearinghouses and emerging-market clearinghouses.

Please note: Although the MSA fabric switch 6 is not listed in the EBS matrix, it is in fact

supported with anything that the MSA1000 is supported with. The drivers for the FC2101 ship either with the MSA1000 installation kit or

with the platform kits for HSG80/EVA. There has always been speculation on whether or not the internal SCSI

controllers supported libraries/autoloaders as well as drives. Although there is information on DL380s and other servers with integrated array controllers saying that libraries are not supported, not all ProLiants have integrated array controllers.

The answer is that no ProLiant supports libraries without the relevant supported PCI SCSI card option !

new product announcments (15th October )

ProLiant Servers ProLiant DL380 G3Continuing to raise the bar for 2-way dense computing, the new ProLiant DL380 offers integrated lights-out management and enterprise-class uptime, optimized for a variety of application usages - still in a 2U form factor. The ProLiant DL380 G3 now includes new

technologies such as PCI-X, iLO and SA5i+ with optional BBWC.

QuickSpecs http://www5.compaq.com/products/quickspecs/Division/Division.html (World Wide version)

Questions and AnswersQ. What is PCI-X technology? A. A compatible extension of the existing PCI Bus, the 64-bit PCI-X architecture

runs at speeds up to 133 MHz, providing burst transfer rates above 1gigabyte per second. This critical I/O bandwidth is needed for industry standard servers running enterprise applications such as Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, Ultra3 SCSI and Cluster Interconnects. PCI-X ensures investment protection because it offers backward compatibility with existing PCI based systems and a stable and complementary technology roadmap for future I/O standard system architectures. For more information on PCI-X, go to http://www.compaq.com/products/servers/technology/pci-x-enablement.html.

Q. What are the key advantages of PCI-X system architecture? A. PCI-X bus protocol allows the expansion card to run at speed up to 133MHz

in the system. This is a significant performance increase from previous 66MHz just from pure bus throughput perspective. In addition, the PCI-X protocol implements additional features such as delayed transaction, which retries the requester when the data is not ready. This allows other devices on the bus to perform its data transaction while the data requested by first device is being gathered (from a hard drive, for example). This ability allows the PCIX bus to be more efficiently utilized.

Q. What is NIC teaming and how can I use it? A. NIC Teaming allows the user to configure two NICs such they form one

single virtual NIC. The teamed pair may then be configured for fault tolerance or load balancing. This feature requires network driver support. HP offers NIC teaming support through the NIC drivers. For more information on NIC teaming, review the readme files for the HP value-add software through the CSP.

Q. How do I enable teaming functionality? A. In the Microsoft operating systems, invoke the HP Teaming applet from the

Windows Control Panel. For non-Microsoft operating systems where teaming is supported, refer to network adapter driver documentation for configuration instructions.

Q uestions and A nswers Q. What are the primary feature differences between the second and

third generation ProLiant ML370 servers? A. New features include, but are not limited to the following:

Processor: Intel Pentium 3 Flip Chip-PGA (512K on die Cache) 1.13GHz and higher vs. Intel Xeon Processors with NetBurst Micro-Architecture and Hyper-Threading technology (512K on die Cache)

Memory: 6GB max memory vs. 12GB max memory (2:1 Interleaved) with Online Spare Support

Memory: PC133 133MHz SDRAM vs. PC2100 200MHz DDR DIMM NIC: 10/100 Fast Ethernet NIC vs. 10/100/1000 Ethernet Controller 66MHz PCI slots vs. 100MHz PCI-X Slots Slot based Remote Insight Lights Out card vs. Integrated Lights Out

Management on G3 Integrated Smart Array 5i Option vs. Slot based Array Controller Option

Q. What is the difference in a 3.3V and a 5V PCI card and how can I tell what will work in my PCI slots?

A. The PCI specification allows for three different PCI add-in cards: 3.3V, 5V and "Universal" adapters, but only 3.3V signaling is allowed for 66MHz or greater operations per specification. New PCI controllers are manufactured to operate at 3.3V, while older options were 5V. New HP servers have 64-bit/66MHz and PCI-X slots, which are keyed to allow only 3.3V or Universal adapters. For more information on the PCI slots in your server, review the product QuickSpecs. Refer to your adapter documentation to determine if your PCI device is keyed for the 3.3V, 5V or Universal specification.

Q. What is 2:1 interleaved memory and what is its primary advantage?A. Very simply, memory interleaving requires that the memory be populated in

pairs. Memory interleaving is a requirement of the chipset that has dual memory paths. The advantage to this design is that the memory data path is doubled, from 64 bits to 128 bits per memory cycle, which leads to increased performance.

Q. What is Advanced Memory Protection?A. HP’s Advanced Memory Protection is designed to maintain server availability

and memory reliability without service intervention. HP’s Advanced Memory Protection consists of a variety of memory protection alternatives, such as Online Spare Memory and Memory Mirroring. These memory configurations provide additional fault tolerance by configuring extra system memory for a fail-over scenario. Each of these options can be configured in ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) by pressing F9 at POST. Within RBSU, select Advanced Memory Protection from the Main Menu. For additional information on

EMEA Pre-sales Support Newsletter October 2002 Page 17

Page 18: Pre-sales Support.doc.doc

Advanced Memory Protection, go to ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/16LC-0402A-WWEN.pdf.

Q. How does Online Spare Memory work? Is it an automatic feature, or does it need to be configured? Does it require a re-boot of NT to take effect after a failure of the primary memory? What level of errors has to occur before the switch to the spare takes place?

A. The Online Spare feature is user configurable and requires the installation of the System Management Driver, which ships with Smart Start. Once the health driver is installed, it will monitor the status of the memory for single bit errors. (HP uses the same single bit error threshold used on the pre-failure warranty limit). If the threshold reaches the pre-determined limit, than System Management Driver will initiate a fail over. The system will copy the content of all the failed memory to the spare bank, and upon completion will automatically switch over. It will not require re-boot of OS. The system will continue to run normally and the switch over is transparent to the OS. After switch over, the failed bank is no longer used. The failed bank can be replaced during the next scheduled system shutdown. The system will automatically switch back to the primary bank the next time you reboot the server.

Q. What is the memory requirement for Online Spare Memory? A. The ML370 G3 Memory option kit is setup to support the Online Spare

Memory. In order to support online Spare Memory, only order memory kits supported by this server. Because ML370 G3 server requires memory to be populated in order, the last bank populated will be designated as fail over bank. This bank needs to have the same or larger capacity than those installed in previous banks in order to support online spare memory. Note: in the G2 the dedicated Online Spare was the 3rd memory bank. In the G3 the Online Spare is the last populated bank. Please refer to your Setup and Installation Guide for more detail.

Q. What is different about the new Intel DP Xeon processors and what are the benefits?

A. DP Xeon processors not only increase system performance, they can also handle a significantly greater workload per processor. That means customers can add more users per server, or more applications per server, and the system will still run faster than Pentium III systems.

This is a result of several performance enhancements for the DP Xeon processors. First, DP Xeon processors use a .13 micron technology that allows higher processor frequencies and a faster system bus. Initially the ML530 G2 server launched with 2.4GHz processors, and now has been refreshed with 2.8GHz processor technology. This class of dual processor (DP) Xeons run at a 400MHz system bus. A large, high-speed data bus increases throughput and performance to critical processor, memory and I/O subsystems, resulting in uncompromising application performance. The new Xeon processor system bus delivers 3.2GB of data per second in and out of the processor. This compares to 1.06GB/s delivered on PIII processor’s with a 133MHz front side bus.

In addition to higher processor speeds, DP Xeon processors now have a 512k L2 cache.

L2 cache is located on die, storing commonly used data closer to the processor, and L2 cache transfers data on each core clock cycle. This results in reduced memory access times and increased performance of a critical server subsystem. The larger the cache size means the ML530 G2 can be used in CPU intensive environments such as databases applications that must access specific data multiple times in order to complete a calculation.

Finally, the new DP Xeon processors incorporate Intel's Hyper-Threading Technology, which makes one physical processor looks like two logical processors to the OS and applications.

Q. What is Hyper-Threading technology and what are the benefits?A. The new Intel XeonTM processors incorporate Intel's Hyper-Threading

Technology, which makes one physical processor look like two logical processors to the OS and applications. These two ‘logical’ processors on a single physical processor can execute different tasks simultaneously using shared hardware resources. By allowing the processor to use on-die resources that would otherwise have been idle, Hyper-Threading Technology provides a performance boost on multi-threading and multi-tasking operations. Not all operating systems take advantage of the XeonTM Hyper-Threading features. For more information and details on what operating systems support Hyper-Threading, go to http://issgweb:2200/products/servers/technology/hyper-threading.html

Q. What is NetBurst architecture and Hyper-Threading? What are the advantages of this technology?

A. With the launch of Intel Xeon Processor MP, Intel is introducing a new breed of processors using the NetBurst architecture. This new architecture integrates the cache subsystem tightly than previous generation processors, thus providing a higher throughput (peak bandwidth of

EMEA Pre-sales Support Newsletter October 2002 Page 19

Page 20: Pre-sales Support.doc.doc

51.2GB/s compared to 28.8GB/s for PIII Xeon processors). Additionally, Intel is also introducing a new concept titled Hyper-Threading (formerly known as Jackson Technology) with the new generation of MP Xeon processors. Quite simply, Hyper-Threading offers significant performance improvement in multi-threaded multi-tasking applications through better utilization of CPU execution resources. It enables a single physical processor to execute two separate codes concurrently, thus reflecting as two logical processors to the OS. Initial performance gain estimates of up to 30% on next generation IA-32 processors. Most contemporary 32-bit operating systems will be supporting Hyper-Threading.

Together, NetBurst architecture and Hyper-Threading are two of the three cornerstones for Intel’s new innovative Xeon MP processors. The third, Integrated Level Cache (iL3) is discussed later in this document.

ProLiant ML570 G2The new ProLiant ML570 G2 is industry's first 4-way expansion server that offers not only best performance, but also increased reliability with hot-plug mirrored memory, unmatched internal expansion and flexibility With expansion capabilities featuring up to 32GB max memory, support for up to 14x1" Hot-plug hard drives, up to 7 PCI-X 100MHz I/O slots, the ProLiant ML570 G2 is a truly expandable and reliable server for a data center or remote enterprise environment.

Q. What are the benefits of Advanced Memory Protection (AMP) and is this a standard feature?

A. HP recently introduced its new Advanced Memory Protection (AMP) technology, which enables memory protection before it fails. In addition to Advanced ECC protection and Online Spare memory available in existing ProLiant ML370 G2/ProLiant DL380 G2 servers, the new ProLiant ML570 G2 features Hot-plug mirrored memory. This new feature allows the user to replace the failed DIMM/s in mirrored memory mode without powering the server down or scheduling any downtime. ML570G2 is the only 4-way server in its class that offers this high level of memory redundancy. The ProLiant ML570 G2 includes the following optional Advanced Memory Protection features:

o Online Spare Memory Offers a higher level of memory protection than Advanced ECC alone. If the number of single-bit correctable errors on a bank exceeds the pre-defined error threshold, that bank will fail over to the online spare bank without intervention or server interruption. Online spare memory can be configured across one or

EMEA Pre-sales Support Newsletter October 2002 Page 20

Page 21: Pre-sales Support.doc.doc

two memory cards. The failed memory can then be replaced at the user's convenience during a scheduled maintenance window.

o Single-Board Mirrored Memory Single-board mirrored memory provides a higher level of availability than Advanced ECC and Online Spare Memory because it protects against diverse multi-bit errors. Single-board Mirrored Memory uses mirrored banks on a single memory board that is configured with one redundant bank of memory. The system writes to both banks, but reads from one. If a DIMM(s) has a multi-bit error, the system simply reads from the mirrored bank instead. This process occurs without intervention or server interruption, and the failed DIMM can be replaced during a regularly scheduled shutdown.

o Hot-Plug Mirrored Memory Hot -Plug Mirrored Memory is a fault-tolerant memory feature that provides a higher level of availability than Advanced ECC, Online Spare Memory, or Single-Board Mirrored Memory because it protects against multi-bit errors and provides the additional benefit of not requiring any server downtime to replace failed DIMMs. Hot-Plug Mirrored Memory requires that two memory boards be installed, one an exact mirror of the other, which run in parallel and provide protection against multi-bit memory errors. When configured for Hot-Plug Mirrored Memory, the system writes to both memory boards, but reads from one. If a read error occurs, the system fails over to the redundant memory board. At that point the memory board containing the failed DIMMs can be hot replaced. Once the failed DIMMs are replaced and the memory board re-installed into the server, the system goes back to full mirrored status. All this occurs without bringing the server down

Note: Hot-Plug Mirrored Memory and Dual-Board Online Spare Memory require the use of two memory cards. All ProLiant ML570 G2 servers ship standard with a single memory board. The second (expansion) memory board is optional.

For more information on how AMP works, http://www.hp.com/products/servers/technology/memoryprotection.html

Q. Is "hot-add" the same as "hot-plug" memory and is this feature available in the new ProLiant ML570 G2?

A. No, "hot-add" allows for dynamic expansion of the memory sub-system without powering down the server while "hot-plug" refers to the capability of removing and replacing a failed DIMM in a dual-memory board configuration. Currently, the ProLiant ML570 G2 supports both “hot-plug” mirrored memory and "hot-add" capabilities. Hot-plug does not require any OS intervention while hot-add does. Microsoft .NET will be the first OS that will enable this functionality.
