Project LoonA Project on INTERNET sharing via Balloons
ByT.U.V. MuraliDharB. Gopi Sai Chandu
Abstract Project Loon is a research and development project
being developed by Google with the mission of providing Internet access to rural and remote areas. The project uses high-altitude balloons placed in the stratosphere at an altitude of about 20 mi (32 km) to create an aerial wireless network with up to 3G-like speeds. The loons provides internet connection in rural and remote areas. It can play a big role after disaster because after disaster all type of network like internet, electricity healthcare etc. then this type of services can be use for making connection with the remote and Rural Areas. and disaster affected peoples.
?
What Exactly is this Project LOON… The aim of this project is to provide internet for
everyone. Loon purpose is to provide wireless network to
remote areas through of a set of altitude balloon equipped with advanced sophisticated wireless trans receiver to connect people globally.
This Technology could allow developing countries to avoid the using of expensive underground infrastructure.
History….
In Japan Shibata et al. proposed a new balloon wire less mesh network system for disasters.
Each balloon has two wireless network1. The Vertical Network2. The Mesh Network
The Technology The Balloons released in to the air floats into the stratosphere,
twice as high as airplanes They are carried around the earth by winds and they can be
steered by raising or descending the altitude with winds moving in desired direction.
The set-up uses software algorithms to determine where its balloons need to go, then moves each one into a layer of wind blowing in the right direction.
People connect to balloon network using special antenna attached to a building
Solar panels about the size of a card table that are just below the free flying balloons generates enough electricity to power the transmitter for a day and beam down the internet signal to ground station.
Unlike Weather Balloons they are Super-pressure balloons that designed to stay up in air for 100+ days
These balloons move along with the air flow in the Stratosphere and maintaining altitude at constant level.
What is this Balloon, we are talking about……..?
This Balloon has 3 blocks
1.Envelope
2.Solar Panels
3.Equipment
Envelope
• The inflatable part of balloon is called balloon envelope.
• The envelope is made from sheets of polyethylene plastic.
• They measure 15mts wide by 12mts tall when fully inflated.
• Each balloon can stay up for more than 100 days.
Solar power
As google can not provide wired supply for these balloons, they selected a efficient way, that is using SOLAR POWER which is flexible.
These Solar Panels are located just below the envelope.
They are capable of producing 100Watts power, Which can be directly used & stored for night time usage
Equipment
The main part of the balloon is Equipment Box. Which has
Transmitter Receiver Battery GPS Microprocessor
It can provide connectivity to a ground area about 80km in diameter using wireless communication called LTE (Long Term Evaluation or 4G)
Launching the Balloon in name of Project Loon by Google
Antenna at Ground station
To receive the transmitted signals the destination should contain a special antenna supplied by the Google
These signals moves from balloon to balloon and reaches the antenna at the ground station.
The speed of the transmission is nearly equal to 3G (21Mbps)
The balloons communicate using unlicensed 2.4 and 5.8 GHz ISM bands

3. Antenna: it is special Receiver at the End user.
Now INTERNET is common word even in remote areas……
