What is a QR code

• QR codes are quick response codes or a barcode

• A phone needs to have:• A camera• A QR code reader

application installed.•

• Once your phone has this, you are ready to take a picture of the codes which will then link your phone to a webpage or any other content

Why would anybody want to use a QR code• Scanning a QR code and

storing or accessing data directly to your phone may be quicker than writing a url down and typing it into your phone’s internet browser later

• Increasingly QR codes can be seen on printed newspapers, journals, articles, can of drinks

• Some lecturers are creating QR codes for their lecture slides

In one Metro newspaper which most Tube users will pick up, there were 12 QR codes for:

• Postcode lottery• Feedback to Metro• Travel to Poland for the football games• Air France travel deals• Vodaphone deals• Pearson College• Villas• Yoga classes• City jobs• Birkbeck University• Clinical trials• Jobsite

• Increasingly it is becoming part of normal life and most people don’t carry laptops or pcs around with them. On the other hand most of us have phones with varying degrees of sophistication

How we are/could be using QR codes

• On our Library Search, you will find a QR code.

• A good number of our students already use their phones to access the Library Search

• Once scanned, you can save the title, author and class number of the book

• Ask a librarian• E resources• etc

• Advertise opening hours.• The Olympics information• Working with lecturers to

embed the library QR codes into their programme and module handbooks.

• Feedback• The codes need to add

value.• Students will need to be

tutored in this new way.

Scanning a QR code with your phone

• Most phones should have a QR code reader

• If not,• You need to install a QR code

reader application on your phone.• It must be compatible with your

phone.• Just installing any QR code reader

application onto your phone may mean your phone will not be able to scan a QR code.

• So when searching for one on the Internet, make sure it is compatible with your phone

• Go to the internet and search for QR code reader just to see what comes up.

• Which one you choose may depend on whether you have an Android or an iPhone

• You may want to also search for e.g QR code reader for Android or Nokia, etc.

• I choose the above because it is recommended for my Nokia x6 which is an Android

• It is free• My phone has enough

memory to down load the QR code reader application

Once you are happy with one, note the URL

• Go to your phone internet browser

• Type the URL• Proceed to download

the QR code reader application

Installing QR code reader on your e.g. Android phone

From your phone’s menu, select Applications Click on Install. App

As you can see my phone does not have a QR code reader app.

From this Installed app. Page, click on Options, Click on download application, proceed to download the app.

Finally a QR code reader app. installed

• This is very fiddly, however once you install the application, you are ready to go.

• It is important that you know how much it will cost you to download data.

• For me the cost is part of my monthly subscription
