DESCRIPTION

A model Farm carrying out intensive and high turnover production, off a small area using Hydroponics Technology. The fodder is grown in a containerized system that controls the light, temperature and water that the seed has exposure to. A system of growing sprouted grain to provide green high quality livestock feeds in 6 Days. This technology provides fodder solution to farmers all year round without depending on climatic condition and can be fed to all types of livestock.

MARKET OPPORTUNITY

BE SMART THINK DIFFERENT!!!!

* There are approximately 45 Hotels in Naivasha along Moi-South Lake Road. Naivasha is one of the major Tourist destinations in Kenya.* There are over 25 Boarding Schools in Naivasha Constituency all of which are potential customers for our specialty products.* More families are health conscious and seeking healthy foods.* Increasing interest in local foods and resources.* Informal survey of Hotels for products and pricing - Hotels indicted a large interest in specialty products. Most Hotels would pay a 10-20% premium for fresh products.

MARKET SEGMENTATION

Page 7: Rbc farm Using Hydroponics to Improve food Security

BE SMART THINK DIFFERENT!!!!

The hydroponic industry is still fairly new in the Kenyan market, in terms of research and the number of completely developed farms. The biggest negative is the start-up costs to erect a fully state-of-the-art project. Therefore, if a project is going to be developed, two major factors need to be taken into account. 1. Selected Markets. Due to high quality,

vegetables must be sold to retail outlets, etc. to retrieve highest price.

2. Project size. The project must be able to supply produce all year round; if not, retail outlets will not be interested.

INDUSTRIAL ANALYSIS

Page 8: Rbc farm Using Hydroponics to Improve food Security

RBC Farm will be a model farm that will see a series of initiatives undertaken which will include the following. 1. Setting up of a horticulture Agribusiness hub - that will harvest, store, add value, brand and market produce when the market is right.2. Agro tourism -act of visiting a working farm or any agricultural, horticultural, or agribusiness operations for the purpose of enjoyment, education or active involvement in the activities of the farm or operation. It includes a wide variety of activities, including buying produce direct from a farm stand, navigating a greenhouse, feeding animals, milking animals etc.3. Key Alliances-Continuously work with researchers and consultants on best breeds and technologies.4. Job creation – the spurred hub of activities (production, value addition, trading and support services) will create job opportunities for many especially the youth and curb crime.5. A Resource centre - that will offer training and leadership experience to the local community, women and youth Groups on Agribusiness best practices

DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM Beyond the ability to grow fresh feed during all

seasons, fodder solution sprouts provide a superior feed product for all types of livestock. Fresh sprouts are high protein, energy, digestible fibre and concentrations of minerals, amino acids and vitamins. Studies have shown other benefits including reduced bloat and higher fertility in animals.

Growing fodder in a controlled environment results in cost effective feed. A fodder unit uses hundreds of times less water than growing Lucerne in an open field and is highly predictable and efficient. Every liter of water is either absorbed into the plant or captured from the unit for irrigating plants or for animal troughs.

1. Reliability: Production is all year round2. Contains all the chemical groups of feed in the right

proportion and form.3. The fodder can be fed to all types of livestock4. Increases the quality of Livestock and Livestock

products5. Reduces incidences of diseases as they stimulate the

immune system6. High Digestibility7. Stimulation of Appetite8. Less wastage of feed9. Reduces anti-nutrition factors10. Contains anti-oxidant properties11. Contains Enzymes and hormones12. Better weight gain

1. Faster, longer growth2. Harvest labour reduced by 80%3. Harvest time reduced, and by doing so:

1. decrease loss in weight gain2. eliminate weight loss from shock

4. Allow greater yield per plant 5. Provide optimum temperature for plant

growth
