2. Question yourself

Tuesday, 25 June 13

Page 16: REBORN. University | Visual Thinkers

Is the message clear?

What colour should I use

Why am I drawing this line?

Why is this the main focus?

This there a more clearer way to do it?

Where is the light coming from?

What do I want to convey

Why does his face look retarded?

What should I fill that gap with?

4. Experiment/ Refine/Repeat

Tuesday, 25 June 13

Page 20: REBORN. University | Visual Thinkers

If you don't 'FEEL' your illustration, why should anyone else?

You have to believe in it to make it work - so if you don't get that feeling experiment with other aspects. Change the colour, the lines, the background, composition

"The only way to evaluate if it's "the best" or not to compare is to compare it to something else."

“Ninety percent of the work goes into the final ten percent”

This is paramount at the refining stage.

Unless you are a Jedi old master of illustration and can get things right on their first attempt, you are cheating yourself, your work and your viewer if things go too smoothly and/ or you get sick of

refining it.

If you don't put in that extra 10% you maybe be keeping it from being a stand-out piece.

Sketching, drawing, visualising in general is the only way to convert haphazard thoughts, concepts and ideas to a meaningful foundation.

This would apply to almost everything, from a business process or workflow design, application architecture, systems infrastructure

topology etc..

We use illustration as a tool to communicate a point. This is achieved through it’s ability to

Attract AttentionThe complexity of the image (attractiveness) can stimulate our senses and will attract us to the visual.

Aid Retention Visuals are more memorable than textual content.

Enhance UnderstandingIllustrations have the capacity to make the visible clear..

New ERA?

Great Success!

It's is an exciting time for illustration as it is one of the most versatile art forms used today. Using the opportunities of other growing industries such as fashion, computer games and animation to take the artistry to the next level.

It has grown from being simply supportive to being a statement unto itself.

When do we illustrate?

A lot of the time we do it without realizing. This is called DOODLING.

This mostly occurs when you are BORED or STRESSED. It is a great way to relieve frustration in a creative manner.

Studies have shown doodling actually prevents you from

DAYDREAMING. Meaning you actually pay attention when doodling.

YOUR RESPONSE

Page 37: REBORN. University | Visual Thinkers

“All the time. I sketch when in meetings, when on

the phone etc. It's my little distraction as

well as a way to explore new thinking. Sometimes I get a little lost in doodling that afterwards I realise that my subconscious has been working overtime. It's fun then to analyse the free flowing lines, and

work out if they mean anything, or better still solved your problem, or found a new opportunity etc...”

“Yep, all my best work comes from scribbling shit down.”

“...my drawings come up in car/motorbike designs years later 90% of what I doodle is car/motobike styling and parts. I guestimate I have

drawn 1 TRILLION cars over the years.”

“Mostly on weekends in my spare time or when I go to

an art gallery”

“I find sketching helps to clarify what I'm thinking, wether it be lines, objects or

letters. Master pieces = 0”

“Everyday, everywhere on everything (notepad, piece of paper, boards, sand)”

“All project ideas have come from sketches…

including logos, branding, etc.”

When we doodle we have an intense freedom allowing us to draw representations of our aspirations, needs and feelings.

"Doodles are like fragments of a map that show how someone’s mind works."

Doodling is a form of illustration as it conveys an idea, message, internal emotion that we have subconsciously put onto paper, so in a way its illustration in its purest form.

Faces - The mood or character of who drew it. If it’s ugly, they are probably mistrusting.

Flowers - Family-centric, warm hearted, sociable.

Birds & Bees - Don’t want to be tied down or landed with difficult tasks or problems.

Names or initials - Ego-centric, crave independence. If writing someone else’s you love them or are having issues.

Shapes (boxes & squares) - You want control of a situation. Thinking through a problem.

Stick figures - In control of your emotions and focused on your life goals.

(Which is weird, because usually it means you can’t draw for sh*t)
