Stereotypes

• Stereotypes of a young man dreaming of being a professional footballer.

• Some counter-types of a our actor is not being:

• The Joker is a very popular character with boys, perhaps because laughter is part of their own “mask of masculinity. Not very popular with his team mates, does socialise/communicate on a football basis. But will turn this around at the end of the song.

• The Jock is always willing to “compromise his own long-term health; he must fight other men when necessary. Our actor will be playing rough (could challenge that he risks his body in order to help his team and his own performance) football in order to create a clip at the start of the music video.

• The Strong Silent Type focuses on “being in charge, acting decisively, containing emotion, and succeeding with women. Being in charge could refer to the captain’s role in the team. Our actor will not be in charge. However shows emotion and will have important decisions to make.

• The Big Shot is defined by his professional status. This stereotype suggests that a real man must be economically powerful and socially successful. None of these. Will appear as a weak link in the team and will prove himself at the end of the music video.

• The Action Hero is “strong, but not necessarily silent. He is often angry. Compared to strong, powerful Centre-backs and midfielders. Our actor is quite weak in a physical way.

Realism• As our music video is based on a sports theme, I think it will be quite

popular to a mass audience. This is because sport if one if the most popular activity’s in the world, where which pretty much everyone has played a sport at some point in their life.

• Although this video targets a mass audience, it is not actually that realistic as it is very rare that someone will make it as a professional athlete in the sport they play, which is the message in this video.

• Our video would also fit well for promotional purposes. It would be perfect for sports companies to advertise their range, fitting in with modern purposes as people (athletes who keep trying to turn professional) could connect to this story/message and try to keep chasing their dream. These companies (e.g. Nike and Adidas can help scout athletes and give the opportunity of playing professionally in their sport).

Gender

• Our music video is a male dominated music video and dominated with two male sports; Football and Rugby. We didn’t consider the option of including females in our music video that’s based around the sports theme we wanted.

Male Female

'Masculinity' is a concept that is made up of more rigid stereotypes than femininity. Representations of men across all media tend to focus on the following:Strength - physical and intellectualPowerSexual attractiveness (which may be based on the above)PhysiqueIndependence (of thought, action)

Representations of women across all media tend to highlight the following:beauty (within narrow conventions)size/physique (again, within narrow conventions)sexuality (as expressed by the above)emotional (as opposed to intellectual) dealingsrelationships (as opposed to independence/freedom)

• We didn’t consider any of these points of representation in the planning of our music video. We believed on the basis that Football and Rugby is an international sport, which both is played by millions who have a passion about it.
