The innovation crunch
• Cloud helped us with flexibility and scalability
• Cloud deployment proves Jevons Paradox
• More and more projects in the innovation queue
• Dev and Test are eating more than 65% of my
enterprise IT
• 85% of IT budget is currently consumed by
‘business as usual
16 16
The risk crunch
• Innovation breeds risk – doing more quickly
• Failing to test induces risk, both financial and reputational
• In 2012 a flawed software deployment cost RBS almost $100M
• In 2013 CAGR of cloud computing was 17%
• The growth in data-security breaches was 62%

Saudi Post Challenge:
Provide immediate DR and back-up for an ageing technology estate whilst
maintaining live services including many bespoke and legacy applications.
Maintain long term objective of having primary workloads in SP data-centre
Solution:
Migrate all current services to Enterprise cloud providing built in high
availabilty, DR and backup
Build a hybrid cloud implementation that enables the SP to make use of
both public and private environments as per each application/business
need.
Results:
• Migrating all workloads to Mobily was cheaper the SP attempting to
build a provision their own DR site
• New systems provisioned in minutes.
• IT risk minimised, performance improved

Medgulf Challenge:
Medgulf is embarking on a regional expansion program, requiring
the rapid deployment of new systems (SAP) and supporting
technology
Solution:
Replicated IaaS for SAP for Insurance (FS-CM, FS-CD, FS-ICM,
FS-RI, FS-BP) Policy Management, Netweaver, QA, WPB, ECM.
SAP Landscape, including SAP HANA, Backup, Replication,
Deployment, Project Management & Training
Results:
Medgulf is “simply pleased with the simplicity, ease of use, and
performance of the solution”.
Project was started within 1 week of approval with initial
deployment of 47 servers for SAP

I learned the following
• Don’t assume that everyone understands “cloud”….
• Actually, no-one does….
• Cloud is a delivery mechanism, not an outcome in itself..
• Make sure you have business focused alignment
• Be prepared to build business cases and clear ROI figures
• Security, DR and back-up are problems that 90% of all organisations
need help with, so use them
• Don’t just sell on cost avoidance. The real prize is greater innovation
and flexibility

Know what a quality cloud provider must do..
However in addition to the above, Enterprise Cloud Service providers should be
offering :
99.999% availability
Nodes across multiple Tier III, or above data-centres.
World class connectivity that is fully redundant in terms of routing diversity.
Disaster recovery solutions that offer RPOs of approaching one minute and RTOs of less than
one hour.
Disk based back-up with multiple archive options
Scalable, pay as you go models allowing for workloads, especially those associated with Big
Data to grow and shrink on demand
The ability for customers to manage their own resources from a single portal.
