INTRODUCTION Electricity- the most widely used form of energy. Energy crisis and its reasons. Availability of regular conventional sources for power generation. Alternatives-new sources for power generation. Speed breaker as “POWER HUMP”. “ Electricity generation from speed breakers by RPGS mechanism.
BLOCK DIAGRAM
BASIC WORKING PRINCIPLE Simple energy conversion from mechanical to electrical. Utilization of kinetic energy of moving vehicles. Electro-Mechanical unit called Power Hump.
continued…. Conversion will be proportional to traffic density. Electrical output can be improved arranging these power humps in series. This generated power can be amplified and stored.
DIFFERENT MECHANISMPossible using 3 different mechanisms Crankshaft mechanism. Roller mechanism. Rack and pinion mechanism.
Why Rack and Pinion ? Crank-shafts are required to be mounted on bearings which creates balancing problem leading to mechanical vibrations which in turn damage the bearings.Secondly as bearings are of sliding type, any occurrence of variable load( which is bit obvious in case of vehicles!!) leads to balancing problem.
Continued…. Roller mechanism has some different disadvantages.
Maintenance will be very difficult
Strength and losses is more.
Elements used in Rack and Pinion
Various machine elements used in construction Rack and pinion. Sprockets. Gears. Flywheel. Shaft. Electric dynamo.
MECHANISM OF DIFFERENT PARTS Rack and pinion:
Sprockets:
Gears:
Flywheel:
Shaft:
Electric Dynamo:
Rack and Pinion Mechanism Improvement in RPGS. Connection of rack with speed-breaker and pinion. Sprocket arrangement. Power transmission from sprocket to shaft of DC generator through gear assembly.
Practical Analysis Table of voltage and current: Relation between generated voltage
and number of vehicles passing:
Advantages Pollution free power generation. Low installation and maintenance cost. No manual work is required during the process. No fuel transportation. Less floor area. No obstruction to traffic. Suitable at parking of multiplexes, malls, tolls ,signals, etc Energy available all the year.
Disadvantages It gets rusted during rainy season. May not work with light vehicle. Less electricity production.
Future scope & Applications Local power generation. Local display board. Street lightening. Charging.
Conclusion The implemented system is non-conventional and the way of power generation technique is clean, environment friendly, cost-effective and safe. This system will reduce power crisis and load shedding also. Hence, we can reduce the burden of demand to some extent.
