Information

In deionization one makes use of two types of ion exchangers. This involves a cation and an anion exchanger. The cation exchanger takes the cations (for example Na +, K +, Ca2 +, Mg2 +) from the water and gives to the solution H + ions. The anion exchanger takes the anions (for example Cl-, SO4 2-, NO3-, HCO3-) out of the water and gives to the solution OH- ions. In the solution, the H + and OH- ions react with each other and form H2O molecules. The water quality obtained is equal or better than 99.9% and all the ions are removed. The method can be easily applied. After some time the ion exchangers will be exhausted and saturated with the cations and anions incorporated from the solution. They must then be restored by cleaning in the original form, so they can be re-used or should be replaced.

In reverse osmosis water is pressed under pressure through a semipermeable membrane.This membrane allows water to pass, but all other substances are stopped almost completely.Also the ions. However, relatively small ions, such as Na+, K+, NO3-, NO2- and CL-, will only be stopped partially. Due to this less good removal of ions the water quality is never equal to 99,9%, but it will be 92 – 95%.In order to prevent rapid contamination of the membrane and to ensure optimum efficiency are high frequent use, slightly acidic (pH 5) inflowing water, good pre-filtering (carbon filter and softener), a flusing program and a high pump pressure an absolute requirement.The reverse osmosis method has further a relatively high electricity consumption.

The values stated above are indicative and based on 25 L mixed bed resin (60% cation / 40% anion). The various salt ratio scan increase or decrease the capacity.

The hardness of the water is determined by the amount of lime which is dissolved in the water.Actually there to different substances; calcium (lime) and magnesium. These two minerals determine the hardness of the water. Water with a high water hardness has a less efficient cleaning capacity and complicates the cleaning action of cleansers.

There is a clear relationship between the water hardness and the production of pure water.At a high water hardness the capacity of filter systems will decrease faster. However, the water hardness is not the only determining factor. The most reliable measurement of efficiency in filtering is achieved by conductivity measurement.
