Carla, Nilo, Alice, and Ben are good friends. They live in the same neighborhood. They love to do things together. On a fine day, they play at the park with other children. Their favorite games are hide-and-seek and piko.

Carla, Nilo, Alice, and Ben are classmates, too. At school, they draw, write, sing, and dance together with their other classmates.

Carla, Nilo, Alice, and Ben can do many things every day. What helps them do different activities? Can you do the things that they can do? What other activities do you do every day?

Children like you can do many things with their body parts. What are these body parts?

Your body is divided into three big groups. These are the head, trunk, and limbs.

What are the parts of your head? Look at yourself in front of a mirror. The top part of your

body is the head. Your hair grows from the top of your head. The uppermost part of your face is your forehead. Below your forehead are your eyebrows, eyes, and eyelashes.

Page 10: Science works!1 tx_prelims-watermark

Ben, Alice, Carla, and Nilo love to play different kinds of games.

Ben and Nilo love to play basketball. Ben can throw the ball with full strength. Nilo can easily catch it with his hands.

Carla and Alice like to play jump rope. Both of them can jump high.

Ben, Alice, Carla, and Nilo use their sense organs when they play. Their different body parts let them do many activities, too.

You have five sense organs. These are your ears, eyes, nose, skin, and tongue. These organs help you know and describe the things around you. Your ears let you hear soft and loud sounds. Your eyes let you see the trees, flowers, clouds, and animals. Your nose helps you smell the odors around you like the fragrant sampaguita flowers in the park or the delicious adobo in the kitchen. Your tongue lets you taste food. Your skin helps you touch or feel objects. You can tell if an object is smooth, rough, soft, or hard because of your skin.

Page 15: Science works!1 tx_prelims-watermark

The Body You Are Gifted With

Aside from your senses, your other body parts also work to help you do your daily activities. Your body parts work together to let you do many things. Your hands and arms help you move objects from one place to another. Your legs and feet help you move around by walking and running. Your eyes and hands let you read and hold a book. Can you think of other activities that you can do with the help of your body parts?

IncredibleFacts When a part of the body such as the leg is badly damaged because of an accident or a disease, doctors may replace it with an artificial one. Doctors use strong plastic and light metal to replace a damaged leg.

What Will Happen If I Lose My Sight?

Objective: Identify the body parts that can be used when one body part cannot be used.

Materials: handkerchief, basketball, pair of cymbals, drum, whistle, xylophone

Procedure: 1. Form a group with six members. Your teacher will

assign an object (a basketball, a pair of cymbals, a drum, a whistle, or a xylophone) to one member of your group. This member will serve as your team leader.

Page 16: Science works!1 tx_prelims-watermark

2. The rest of the members of the group will be blindfolded using a handkerchief. The blindfolded members will be guided by your teacher to an area in the classroom. (You may also do this activity in the gym with your teacher’s guidance.) The team leaders with the different objects will be assigned to different places in the classroom.

3. On your teacher’s signal, the team leaders will produce sounds using the objects given to them. The blindfolded members must then look for their own group as they hear the sounds.

4. The first group that can regroup at the shortest time will be the winner.

Questions: 1. How did you feel when you were blindfolded? 2. What senses did you use to look for your group? 3. How did you feel when you finally found your

group? 4. For the team leader: What body parts did you use

when you made sounds using the object given to you?

It is another day for school. When Nilo woke up, he did not feel well. He sneezed and felt cold. His mother touched his forehead and felt that he is hot. Nilo has fever.

Fever is a sign that something is wrong with your body. When you are sick, you must stay at home to avoid spreading your sickness. How can you protect yourself from diseases?

You must always take a bath every day. Taking a bath does not only make you feel fresh. It also washes away the germs that might make you sick.

Washing your hands regularly is very important. Your hands can easily pick up germs. You must wash your hands before and after eating. You also need to wash your hands after using the bathroom.

Follow these steps on how to wash your hands properly.

21 Wet your hands. Apply soap and rub your hands together for 20 seconds.

Page 21: Science works!1 tx_prelims-watermark

Eat also healthy foods like fruits, meat, and vegetables, and drink lots of water. These can help protect you from sickness. The food you eat gives you nutrients and energy that your body needs. The water you drink can replace the water you lost when you sweat and urinate.

After eating, you should always brush your teeth to keep them healthy. Brush your teeth and tongue gently to remove tiny bits of food left in between your teeth and the “bumps” of your tongue.

You use different materials to clean your body. Are you familiar with these cleaning materials? Can you tell for which parts of the body these cleaning materials are used?

When using cleaning materials, you should ask for the help of an adult. These cleaning materials can harm your body if not properly used.

43 Rinse both hands for 10 seconds.

Dry your hands.

In this lesson, you will be able to answer the following questions: 1. Why is food important? 2. What does food do to the body?

Carla, Nilo, Ben, and Alice like to eat together. Carla’s favorite food is spaghetti. Nilo likes to eat biko and suman. Ben loves to eat carrot cake. Alice’s favorite food is tinola. All of them like to eat vegetables and fruits, too.

Eating healthy foods will make your body healthy and strong. It is important to choose the right foods in the right amount and eat them on time.

The foods you eat can be grouped into three big groups called go foods, grow foods, and glow foods.

Go foods give you the energy to do your daily tasks. These foods are also known as the energy-giving foods. Some examples of go foods are bread, cereal, rice, and pasta.

Page 26: Science works!1 tx_prelims-watermark

Grow foods give your body the nutrients it needs. These foods are called the body-building foods. Grow foods include meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, cheese, and milk.

Glow foods are also called the body-regulating foods. The vitamins and minerals from these foods make your skin healthy. These nutrients are present in fruits and vegetables. How often do you eat fruits and vegetables?

Here are some of the vitamins and minerals that are good for the body: 1. Calcium – This makes bones and teeth strong. Milk

and cheese are rich in calcium.

2. Vitamin A – This keeps the eyes in good condition. Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A.

3. Vitamin E – This keeps the skin healthy. Vegetable oil and peanut butter contain vitamin E.

4. Vitamin C – This makes the body’s defense system strong to fight against sickness such as common cold and influenza (flu). Oranges, calamansi, and other citrus fruits contain vitamin C.

Children like you should eat a balanced meal. Eating a balanced meal means that you must always eat meals that contain the three basic food groups.

Eating a balanced meal makes your body healthy and strong. It helps protect you from any disease or sickness.

To know what makes up a balanced meal, nutritionists (people who are experts in nutrition) designed the food pyramid. A food pyramid serves a guide for people to have a balanced meal each day. Look at the food pyramid below.

Eat just enough.

Eat moderately.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning. Alice, Nilo, Carla, and Ben went to the park. Nilo and Alice were running around the park. Carla and Ben went up and down the slide.

After running, Alice and Nilo felt that they were breathing really fast and feeling thirsty. So, they drank lots of water.

Your body needs clean and fresh air. Air contains many different gases. The gas needed by your body is called oxygen. Oxygen comes from plants. The park is one of the best places to breathe in fresh and clean air. There are many trees and other plants at the park. Can you think of other places where you can breathe in clean and fresh air?

Try holding your nose and stop breathing for 30 seconds. Were you able to do it? How did you feel? What would happen when a person’s supply of oxygen is cut off? Surely, that person will pass out or worse, will die.

Breathing in dirty air is bad for your body. The air that comes out from cars is dirty. It can make you sick. When you are on the road and the air is thick with black or gray smoke coming out of the cars, you should cover your nose with a handkerchief.
