Objectives

The Information & Communications Technology (ICT) domain include a wide

range of technologies that have been evolving at a brisk pace for the last thirty years.  The direct and indirect economic importance of

ICT in industrialized societies is very significant, if not critical.  This short

presentation will provide a perspective on what ICT is and its probable evolution in the

near to middle term.

Conclusions• ICT is a key sector of Canada’s economy, as well as a

critical infrastructure and enabler.• ICT should keep its current pace of development

during the decade.• The ICT service sector is rapidly going global. • Consortia drive ICT standards development (about

350 of them according to a recent CEN survey).• Formal standards bodies are adopting Consortia

developed standards that meet their criteria.

Recommendations

Focus limited resources on key value-added activities:

– Enhanced awareness tools (web site)

– Support strategic sectors• Telecom

• ‘Software & Computer Services’

• Multimedia

– Support strategic application domains (e.g. health)

– Support participation in key committees:• Consortia

• Formal standards bodies
