Product Strategy Input:Simulation Data Management

John Sperling – VP Product Management, Aras

Overview

Aras recognizes the importance of managing simulation in the context of PLM

We want to develop an open, flexible approach that can address a wide range of analysis needs

ANSYS has partnered with us to explore this topic

We have started discussions for developing an Aras Innovator to ANSYS EKM integration

We would like your feedback!

Possible Approaches

Aras has a lot of experience with integrations to other systems – Office, CAD, PDM, etc.

When managing CAD, there are trade-offs between a direct approach and a two-tier PDM approach

With Simulation, we think the two-tier approach using an SDM system makes sense

Simulation Data Management in PLM

The value of a dedicated SDM system like EKM is:

▫ Task-focused nature of the user interface

▫ Remote job submission and management

▫ Workflow focused on specialized nature of simulation

Benefits of adding PLM on top of this include:

▫ Access to source CAD data for building analysis models

▫ Process synchronization and visibility throughout the enterprise

▫ Permanent archival of input and output files

▫ Visualization of simulation results in PLM for decision making

1 User creates Simulation item in Aras and links it to appropriate CAD Document

2 User promotes to In Work, which automatically:• Creates new EKM

Project Folder• Copies linked CAD files

to the folder• Starts EKM workflow

3 EKM users conduct activities within the defined simulation workflow

4 When the EKM workflow is approved:• Specific simulation files copied

to Aras and attached to Simulation item

• State changed to Complete

5 User can optionally move Simulation item to Accepted or Rejected state

Open Discussion – Topics to Consider

Where are by whom should the process be initiated? In PLM? In SDM?

What data makes sense to maintain in PLM?

What PLM relationships make sense for a “Simulation” item?

How does a “Simulation” item fit within an ECO workflow?
