What Does FamilySearch Do and Why?

FamilySearch has access to billions of historical records on microfilm and original documents

Many of these records have been digitized into images that can be viewed online

Over 1.1 billion people in the tree

Nearly 2.5 million users have contributed information to the tree

Evidence data in the tree continues to grow in quantity and quality

Over 291,000 unique visitors to familysearch.org every day

Over 600 million historical record sources have already been attached to persons in the tree

More than 1.6 million sources are added to persons every week by users

More than 10 million memories (photos, documents, stories and audio) have been uploaded

Why Get a FamilySearch Account?

Can search historical records without an account, but can’t link them to persons in the tree

Need an account to view or edit persons in Family Tree

Need an account to upload photos, stories, documents, etc. or link them to persons in the tree

Can’t collaborate with other users without an account

Start Building Your Tree by Adding Closest Relatives

Go to https://familysearch.org/first-run to go through the wizard to add closest relatives again

Note that all living persons in Family Tree will only be visible to you

View training for Family Tree at https://familysearch.org/ask/#/tree/ at any time

If you are LDS, be sure to link to your church membership record to automatically bring in all of

your relatives that are/were members of the LDS church into your tree

Make your e-mail public so other users can contact you more easily

Basic Ways to View Information / Navigate the Tree

Tree Views

o Landscape Pedigree – default view

o Portrait Pedigree – best view when there are lots of photos for beginners

o Fan Chart – shows an extra generation

o Descendancy View – great for looking down instead of up

Person Card

o Provides basic information about a person

o Provides links to jump to Tree View or Person Detail Page

o Tip: Middle Click or Ctrl-Click on Windows and Command-Click on Mac will open a new

tab with the Tree/Person

History List

o Provides history of most recently visited 50 persons in the tree

o Can filter and jump to any person in your list or a supplied person id

o Can also add a new person to the tree that isn’t connected to anyone else

Research Suggestions

Suggestions for additional family members, etc.

o Life Sketch and Vital Information

o Other Information – Can record many more specific facts and events about persons

o Sources

Lists all sources attached to the person

Can tag sources as containing information about events

Links jump directly to records or web pages containing information

Can create sources from uploaded documents

Add custom sources for records not found on FamilySearch

Can reorder via drag and drop

o Search Records

Opens new tab with pre-populated search as starting point to look for records

Use search options to find matching records

Can search records on Ancestry, FindMyPast and MyHeritage too

o Family Members – View spouses, children, parents and siblings

Click the pencil edit icon to modify information or remove from family

Add additional children or siblings easily

Select preferred spouse or parents as desired

o Discussions – Provide way to collaborate with others regarding details on a person

o Notes – Allow addition of any information of note about the person

o Print Useful and Beautiful Charts

Pedigree, Portrait Pedigree, Fan Chart and Family Group Sheet

Can easily print various charts from any person detail page and some tree views

Pedigree Chart and Family Group Sheets are editable PDFs that can be saved

and modified later

Easy to share with others

o Show All Changes

Brings up the change log where details about all changes can be viewed

Click on blue links to see more information

Can view who made changes and contact them

Can restore some changes

Can view changes to some change types (i.e. all changes to birth) by clicking on

the title of the change or the History link from the person detail page.

Use User to User Messaging feature to contact other users about changes

o Tools

Possible Duplicates - Checks the system for duplicate persons that may need to

be merged

Report Abuse - Report if you see other users modifying data in obscene or

destructive ways

Delete Person - You can delete persons that you are the only contributor for. If

you see something else you feel should be removed, please call support.
