Click on ‘Corporate Life’ at www.ItsMyAscent.com/CareerAdvice to leave your reply A ccording to a Regus survey, about 51 per cent of Indian employees say their stress levels have risen over the past year. The research focused on possible solutions and found that nearly three quarters (72 per cent) of Indian respondents identify flexible working as a way of cutting stress. “There are definitely no con- straints, which limit an Indian organisation from offering flexible working hours to an employee; most Indian organisations have an excellent structure, productivity design and management framework in place,” says Monty Bharali, director & head - HR, DST Worldwide Services, India. According to Jayanthi Vaidyanathan, director – HR, PayPal India, flexible working hours completely depend on the business that the company is into. A bank or hospital cannot have this arrangement where everything is time-bound. But, for organisations where employees keep their cre- ative hats on all the time, a flexible set-up works a lot to stimulate the grey cells. “Not all work can be done away from office as they may require a complex infrastructure that cannot be replicated at home,” adds Raj Karunakaran, senior man- ager HR, Philips Innovation Campus. “Some of the areas where compa- nies encounter challenges when implementing flexible working options for employees are in bal- ancing customer and employee demands; treating all employees fairly; ensuring employees working remotely receive all communica- tions and are treated by other employees as a part of the team, etc,” explains Manoj Biswas, unit HR lead, Accenture India. Vaidyanathan says transparency is another major area for flexi-work hours to become a successful strat- egy. Inspite of these challenges, organisations can look at innova- tive ways of fostering flexi-hours. “The survey clearly demonstrates a correlation between flexible work- ing (time and/or place of work) and improved productivity. The respondents (75 per cent) said they feel more motivated due to flexible working, perhaps indicating why they are able to become more pro- ductive and generate more rev- enue,” explains Madhusudan Thakur, regional VP, South Asia, Regus. “Flexible working hours will be the norm for tomorrow’s great places to work,” concludes Remi Sai, manager, HR, Cypress Semiconductors. Although girls add up to just 10-33 per cent of the stu- dent strength at the B-schools in the country, they still have been grabbing great offers at campus placements. “HR teams in organisa- tions have been mandat- ed with maintaining a balance in the gender ratio of employees; this and an overall awareness and acceptance of the importance of having a well-balanced employee strength has prompted business leaders to identify roles where women would be attuned, productive, available and preferred. Organisations are therefore, starting at the grassroot levels of hiring females at the campus level, so that they can train and nurture them into becoming future lead- ers of the world,” informs Sangeeta Lala, senior VP & co- founder, TeamLease Services. “We have seen that on an aver- age, women graduates have been able to secure roles whereby they have raised the ratio of their out- going to incoming salaries by 2.8 times,” asserts V K Menon, senior director-careers, Admissions and Financial Aid at the ISB. Saundarya Rajesh, founder-pres- ident, AVTAR Career Creators and FLEXI Careers India, working in the space of enhancing women’s workforce participation rate in India says, “Diversity hiring intent among leading companies has gone up by almost 500 per cent since last year, according to a recent study done by us. Companies in the past two years have recognised the benefit of having more women in the work- force – the benefits of a gender- balanced, diverse workforce are myriad, including the fact that a more diverse management team delivers ten per cent better results than an all-male team.” Traditionally, women have been under-represented in organisa- tions and the argument for equal opportunity employment has not borne sufficient results in India. Naveen Narayanan, global head– talent acquisition, HCL Technologies points out that trends show a lot of companies are focused on diversity hiring than ever before. “Companies are advocating and strongly working towards hiring/developing women executives as they believe the natu- ral diversity it brings in thinking and action is of value to their firms. Various targeted campaigns for hiring women employees, creat- ing inclusive workplaces and poli- cies focused on retention of women employees are some initiatives. This has become a norm for any progressive organisation,” he states. Prof Satish Kalra, dean (place- ment), International Management Institute (IMI) concurs, “There has been a conscious effort to recruit more women professionals during campus hires this year. Some companies have gone the other way and mandated that for some jobs (like senior research engineer, market development manager, legal counsel, etc), they would prefer women.” The numbers are increasing, the demand too is increasing and hence, the future for women at the workplace certainly looks brighter.
