Arthroscopic Surgery- A surgical procedure done by

orthopaedic surgeons

- Used to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint

- arthroscopy comes from two Greek words, "arthro" (joint) and "skopein" (to look). It literally means "to look within the joint.

• Arthroscope

• Miniature television camera (which is attached to the arthroscope)

Why you may need Arthroscopic Surgery

Most arthroscopic surgeries are done on the shoulder, knee, wrist, and elbow

Surgery is done to get loose bodies like bone or cartilage out, help repair tears or help with carpal tunnel syndrome

MRI• Magnetic Resonance Imaging

(MRI)

• Device that is used to help get an idea if Arthroscopic surgery needs to be performed

• Allows you to get a look at tissues inside the body and not just the bones

• MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio frequency signals to create the picture

• Can get a full image inside

• Effective

• Little to No side effects

• Can diagnose strokes in their earliest stages and see soft tissue masses ect.

Cons

• Long process can take 30min to up to 2 hours

• Machine is loud

• Uncomfortable

• People with pacemakers or metal in their body can not have an MRI

X-Rays• Uses electromagnetic radiation to

create images

• Used to use film to record the image.

• Body appears light or dark because of Calcium in your bones. The Calcium absorbs the X-rays that is why they appear more than tissue.

Conclusion

All of these different technologies help each other out. Most of them have a positive result. With x-rays they see the basic then MRIs are the next step up. Without these imaging systems people would go into surgeries and the doctors would be just exploring trying to figure out the problem maybe taking more time then need or can cause problems by poking something. With out these technologies we wouldn’t be as advanced in the medical knowledge that we have today.
