That Thing… Lara Croft
Type, Theme and Narrative Structure
• It is a mixed documentary containing interviews, archive material and a voice over.
• It’s themes are the gaming industry and how media sees certain changes.
• It is a closed, single strand and non-linear.• Closed because it covers the whole topic leaving no
questions.• Single strand because it only talks about Lara Croft• It is non-linear because different parts of the interview are
shown at different points throughout the documentary.
Camerawork
• The conventional camerawork for interviews is used eg. Close up, medium close up and big close up.
• Tracking shots are also used when they are filming the people playing the game as they pass them.
• There are also zooms on people’s screens• The conventional framing for an interview is used.
Mise en Scene and Sound
• During interviews they use font projection and project clips from the game on to the interviewee.
• Some interviews are done in an internet café.• There is a male narrator who speaks standard English and
he links everything together.• There is also fast moving electronic music playing in the
background.
Editing, Archive Material and Graphics
• Simple cuts are used because if anything more flashy was used it could be a distraction for the viewers.
• There is footage taken from the game that they use throughout the documentary.
• They also use footage from an interview with Angelina Jolie Who played Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider film
• The only graphics used are simple white fonts giving their name and relevance to the topic.
