Madonna is from a strict Italian culture which shows the contrast between her traditional expectations and her music. Within this image there is a huge contrast through her image because the image presents Madonna in a wedding dress which should show purity. However, the wedding dress is not an elegant dress but in fact it shows Madonna being a rebellious character. The fact that the album is called “Like a virgin” caused an outrage within society as she is satirising the norms and values of catholic culture. This is a clear piece of evidence to show Madonna has a very rebellious nature through her music and does not care about shocking her audience.

1998From Madonna’s image in 1984 there is a huge comparison to her image in 1998. In 1998 her style was more spiritual as you can tell by the images on your left hand side. The top image still shows some rebellious characteristics because Madonna, coming from a catholic background is challenging what is supposed to be her religion to and shows that she is a still going against her traditional catholic norms and values. This is because she is wearing a black cloak which may make people interpret her new style as being gothic and sinister. This is also shown in the second image through Madonna doing a sort of spiritual symbol with her hands. Therefore with in a few years Madonna’s image has changed from being extremely rebellious and anti-religion to spiritual beliefs.

2000In the year 2000 Madonna became more mainstream by embracing patriotism for her birth country. Through the cowboy hat and the leather trousers we gain the impression that there is country music reflected through this image. Madonna’s front cover to the album “Music” has a horse and cowboy in the right corner. This reinforces the idea of country music being promoted through both her image and music from the album with songs like “Don’t tell me”. Patriotism is shown through the middle picture by Madonna wearing a USA t-shirt. This shows she is supporting her country as well as advertising her music.

2005 & 2008Madonna became even more mainstream by the 2005. “Hung up” [resents her being her more seductive which shows Madonna following the stereotypes for females. To be successful females need to be half naked to have more fans. In the year 2008 Madonna released her song “give it to me” by the title us as the audience may make us think that the song is seductive. This is reinforced through the album cover “Hard cover”. Madonna has aged towards the late 2000s which shows she is still trying to fit in the music industry. However she is being a conformist by being seductive and being half naked in her music videos and albums.
