1. Balance

Balance is achieved when visual proportions and weights of texture, color and space are distributed in a harmonious way that responds to our physical senses.

1. BalanceIn the left image, the three squares on each side of the central rectangle are equal in value. Here, repetition, value (shade), color, and shape all create a symmetrical balance that is noticeable and sleek to the spectator’s eyes.

Insights

Although symmetry can be pleasing to the eye, in some cases even an “asymmetrical balance” can often be more creative and engaging for the spectator.

2. Scale and Proportion

Proportion is the relationship between shapes, sizes and objects. Scale is all about size, and proportion is all about the contextual relationship between these sizes.

Insights

Think in terms of your event space and event attendees. An important tip is to scale all major event space structures, in proportion to the actual size of your event attendees. Design your event from their perspective, while keeping in mind the big picture you want to create.

3. Color Theory

Like any design element you use, your choice of color should be a thoughtful reflection upon your design objectives. What colors and what combinations of colors best reflect the meaning of your design?

Insights

The emotional effect that colors induce on a spectator is relative to the spectator. For instance, the spectator’s response to the colors of your design has to do with his/her age, gender, and other personal characteristics. So, in order to use color effectively, you must know your audience.

4. Color Psychology

Colors stir up different kinds of moods. Thus one of the reasons why Pablo Picasso's “blue period” is associated with melinalia, or why Vincent van Gogh’s Wheat Fields - filled with earth tones, are associated with calmness.

Principles of Design

01 13

InsightsIf color instigates mood, then choosing a color also directly affects your event attendee experience. As an event planner you should value your choices in color the way that you would value your event brand, because both go hand in hand.

5. Typography

Typography includes point size, font, and line spacing, and particularly involves the way that these factors are arranged.

InsightsKnowing your event theme is vital. If you’re planning a corporate conference, perhaps a classical typeface is the best option.

If you want to encourage networking, choosing a typeface that evokes informality is a great way of promoting this interaction.

6. Creativity

While creativity is not necessarily an established design principle, it should be. From seating to catering, creativity is key to a design that will you set your event apart from the rest.

1. Usability & DesignUsability best practices center around building an experience for attendees that improve their relationship to your event.

Without a focused attention on quality, your event site visitors will not perceive your event brand as credible enough to warrant a ticket purchase.

InsightsWhen designing the way that your users will navigate your event site, you should consider what your site’s most important parts are.

For example, call-to-action buttons should be sized and spaced appropriately. You should emphasize the buttons that people are expected to click more so that users don’t get confused about which button to click.

2. Mobile Website DesignAccording to Techcrunch, around 80 percent of adults own a smartphone. Considering today’s technology trends, your event website should be optimized for mobile.

Website Design

InsightsKeep It Simple: Limiting the layers of navigation on your site to two or a maximum of three levels is the best way to make sure your users are getting their information in the quickest manner. Also, make sure that images have a small byte size so that the site does not take too long to load.

Content is Key: Short bulleted sentences that cut to the point are best for mobile users.

Test: A/B or split testing is necessary for mobile optimization (and every other step in your event design process!)

3. Writing & Formatting A great way of maintaining credibility is also to create relevant content for your users on your event site, but implementing content on your site is pointless unless you design and format it the right way.

InsightsUsers tend to focus on major points and section heads. Websites that are optimized for this reading pattern have a blog title, a header image to add some visual interest to the piece, and clearly delineated sections that make scanning a page easier.

InsightsWhen writing for scanning readers, keep it short, the old saying “brevity is a virtue” could not be more true when it comes to web design.

3. ImageThe composition and placement of images and other forms of digital media on your website should be done with a philosophy in mind, otherwise items will become scattered and hard for visitors to follow.

3. ImageThe Rule of Thirds: All images should be broken down into thirds, or divided into nine equal parts. Choosing images that are broken down in this way ensures that you’ll be adding balance to your event site.

image whereas the subject lies on the upper-left intersection in the right image.

✦ By moving the subject of the image to the intersection of these lines, the image becomes more unique and more compositionally strong than placing the image in the center.

Sustainable design refers to the practice of implementing a carefully thought out design that minimizes any negative environmental or social impact.

A major component of sustainable design is finding a way to create a design that is not just sustainable environmentally and socially, but also in terms of beauty.

InsightsOpting for an event networking solution that provides attendees with all of the information found on typical printed booklets might have a bigger upfront cost for example, but you’ll save time printing out, shipping and distributing printed booklets. In the long run, this added efficiency might actually save you money.
