■ Summary of Damage caused by the 3.11 Earthquake
1. The changed requirements for green building by the earthquake on 3.11, 2011.
The Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, and its aftermath exhibited the following:
(1) Massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake connecting six hypo-central regions
(2) Unprecedented massive tsunami
(3) Damage to nuclear power plants resulting in power shortages
Future facilities and communities will seek
to ensure a basic performance
that is grounded on new ways of thinking.
Complex Damage
• buildings complied with earlier quakeproof standards • non-structural parts and materials (e.g,. ceilings, walls,
facility pipes, and machinery)• liquefaction• long-period seismic tremors
• Hardware: Breakwaters, tide embankments• Software: Safe evacuation locations (elevated ground and
shelter buildings) and evacuation training/drills
• Power-saving in ordinary times (eco) • Self-supporting energy system in the event of
emergencies (BCP) • Improving nuclear power plant safety

■Demand response & Thermal storage and battery – electric Power peak shift & cut -
・ In this summer: Peak reduced by 37%, Consumption reduced by 6% (Shimizu Institute of Technology)
Power peak shift : Load predicting control system
・ Accuracy power load to be predicted depending on the weather forecast, etc.
・ Thermal storage and Batteries are controlled based on the predicted load to shift and down the power peak
Power peak cut : Demand response control system
・ In the event of further power supply shortage, specified HAVC machines to be stopped depending on the pre-study schedule, to cut the power peak.
