Alonso, the King of Naples & Antonio, the Duke of Milan, with their followers, are shipwrecked on their way back from the marriage of Alonso’s daughter.

Prospero tells his daughter, Miranda, how they were removed from his dukedom of Milan by his brother Antonio & the King of Naples. Now using his magical powers, he has created a storm to right those wrongs.

Prospero checks what his spirit Ariel has done with the shipwrecked sailors, then reminds Ariel how he rescued him from the witch Sycorax, mother of Caliban.

Caliban, a monster-like man, lusts after Miranda and resents Prospero for taking ‘his’ island from him.

Page 5: The Plot In Ppt

Ferdinand, son of the King of Naples, follows Ariel’s music until he meets Miranda. Prospero realises this is love at first sight and puts Ferdinand to the test.

Elsewhere on the island, the shipwrecked nobles amazed at the freshness of their garments, wonder where they are, and lament the loss of Ferdinand.

Antonio encourages Sebastian to start plotting against Alonso, (as he had against Propsero) and they are stopped only by Ariel’s magic.

Stephano & Trinculo, two of Alonso’s shipwrecked servants, bump into Caliban and introduce him to alcohol.

Ferdinand and Miranda fall in love, and Prospero accepts this.

Caliban encourages Stephano & Trinculo to kill Prospero.

Magical shapes, brought buy Ariel, bring the evil nobles towards acknowledging their crimes, as Prospero planned

Prospero gives Ferdinand Miranda’s hand in marriage, and celebrates this with a magical pageant of goddesses who bless the couple.

Prospero remembers the conspiracy against him urged by Caliban, and uses Ariel’s magic to distract and torment them.

Prospero, now with all his enemies, past & present, in his power decides to forgive rather than punish. He will give up the magic that has made possible the recognition & reconciliation that can now happen.

Prospero, having embraced Gonzalo, the one person who remained loyal to him, forgives Alonso and demands his dukedom back from his brother, Antonio.

Page 16: The Plot In Ppt

The innocence & purity of Ferdinand & Miranda signal a new beginning: the magic of the island has enabled the past crimes to be acknowledged & atoned for. Prospero no longer needs his magic.
