IPCC conclusions in 2007: Irreversible tipping point at plus two degrees

above pre-industrial level (today: + .87 degrees)Requires peak in global emissions by 2015-20

and 50-80% reductions in 2050

What is the target?

Page 4: Thomas Færgeman Concito

The imminent risk is that if warming extends beyond certain so-called tipping points, a number of feed-backmechanisms set in:

•Diminishing CO2 uptake capacity in the sea•Melting of solar radiation deflecting ice caps•The thawing of methane saturated permafrost areas

-spiraling the globe into a faster and, notably, irreversible, rate of global warming.

Tipping points

50% Co2 reduktion i 200 – 80% i 2030

Population projected to rise from 6.7 billion

today to 9 billion in 2050

Fair allocation would mean 2 tons per person

Denmark 2010: 13 tons / 19 tons

Since IPCC’s latest report

The EU is committed to reducing its overall emissions to at least 20% below 1990 levels by 2020, and is ready to scale up this reduction to 30%.

Now Denmark supports this target.

Where are we?

The EU has also set itself the target of increasing the share of renewable energy use to 20% by 2020.

What is the target?

The good news

Page 12: Thomas Færgeman Concito

We can do it and it is a winner case

For the environment For the economy For the security

40% CO2 reduction in 2020 – 80% in 2050

Page 13: Thomas Færgeman Concito

We can do it by

3. Energy efficiency4. Low or no carbon energy supply 5. Terrestial carbon in forestry and agriculture 6. Behavioral change

50% CO2 reduction in 2020 – 80% in 2030

Transport in net energy cons.: 225 PJ80% losses: 180 PJ

The good news: We can do it!

Two steps towards 80-95% CO2 reduction:

First step: Outreach of existings technologies Second step: Innovation of new clean tech

First step: 2010 – 2020 (40%) Second step: 2020 – 2050 (80-95%)

A two step pathway to 80-95% CO2 reduction

Providing products/commoditiesthat gives value to the consumerwith a minimal emission of GHG.

The challenge for business

Page 19: Thomas Færgeman Concito

The good news: We can do it!

It takes:

2.Legal framework and economic regulations from the politicians

3. Financing and long term investments from the private sector – good business!

4. Active citizens and businesses – like you
