Relative Brightness, Scene-referred Signal
Conventional approach to video for the last century
Represents light detected by the camera (ratio of pixel light intensity to peak intensity)
Broadcast industry now converging to the BBC/NHK Hybrid Log Gamma HDR
Production similar to today as no metadata are required
2017 UHD TVs mostly implement HLG. UHD cameras with HLG recording available.
First HLG services are on air
A deeper look on HDR
13
Absolute Brightness, Display-referred Signal
New approach to video
Represents light displayed on the production / grading monitor in nits
Requires metadata to handle display mapping
Metadata can be static (PQ/HDR10) or dynamic (Dolby Vision, Technicolor, HDR10+)

Summary: Our HDR experiences so far
Good HDR content looks generally great
Independent of specific HDR technology
Problem: each vendor provides different test material
HDR demos at exhibitions prove advantages as claimed by the respective technology vendor
Dynamic metadata systems represent best the director‘s artistic intent
But viewers may have a different preference.....
Very difficult for consumers to spot differences between the various HDR technologies
When viewed in BT. 2020 colour space on todays HDR consumer displays (+/- 1000 nits)
Consumer doesn‘t know the director‘s artistic intent and neither the original scene colour tones.......
HLG is ideal for live broadcasts and fast, immediate workflow integration
Dynamic metadata systems will provide additional quality details (and may be requested by studios)

Television traditionally uses 50Hz or 60Hz frame rates (interlaced or progressive)
With increasing TV brightness, flicker and motion blur become more visible
During fast movements (camera or action e.g. sports), pictures have a tendency to smear
Phase-2B provides backwards & non-backwards compatible HFR mechanisms (100/120fps)
Important condition is that HFR displays become available
Tests during SES Industry Days in May 2017 and at IBC 2017
Update on High Frame Rate (HFR)

SES carries several 24/7 UHD demo channels (on multiple orbital positions)
These demo channels are all fully compliant with DVB specs and using HEVC @50Hz
Focus in 2016/17: testing different High Dynamic Range (HDR) technologies and HFR
Testing with industry: HDR, HFR, ….

Conclusions
UHD growing according to expectations – now 34 channels on SES‘ satellites
And it will get even better => All World Cup 2018 matches will be produced in Ultra HD!
Issues for UHD broadcasters: „the usual“ (how to monetize UHD & new technology investments)
HDR is very important but plethora of technology choices seem to create some confusion
Necessity to follow broadcast standards (for HDR, backwards compatible HFR,...)
Display manufacturers driving the UHD consumer market with impressive sales figures
Satellite transmission provides highest QoS and picture quality, in particular for live events
Pace of technology innovation remains high: creating sometimes interoperability issues
