What is CIVITAS?
CIVITAS - cleaner and better transport in cities –
stands for CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability.
CIVITAS is an EU initiative for supporting and
evaluating the implementation of integrated
sustainable and energy efficient urban transport strategies
in European cities that should make a real difference to the
welfare of the European citizen.

CIVITAS II Facts & Figures
17 Demonstration Projects implemented over 200 measures across 8 thematic areas
Forum Members: 72 (2005) , 170 (2009), representing 60 million EU inhabitants
3150 new carpoolers, 700 clean vehicles, 60 km cycle lanes, 950 cycle parks, 2400 rental bikes, modal split cycling on average changed from 1% to 7%, awareness 90%, travel times savings up to 25%, fuel savings up to 8%, 1,6 website visits, 5000 off-street parking facilities, extension/installation of 13 LEZ, reduction of car trips 12%, 89% less congestion in LEZ, dissatisfaction levels fell from 76% to 33%, active satisfaction rose to 58%, etc. etc. etc.
All small steps towards the critical mass that is so urgently needed

Final Comment
CIVITAS II has been particularly successful in raising the profile
of sustainability measures.
The evaluation and related processes have generated a
political driving force.
