Make the « Rentrée Littéraire » accessible
2013 : Publishers decide to anticipate requests, and to provide
to associations the files of the titles of the Rentrée Littéraire (Fall
literary season) before publication in digital format.
BrailleNet gets time to adapt the files, and the Rentrée Littéraire
titles are available at the same time for people without and with
reading disabilities.
CNL is funding the project, and BNF is supporting it.
Adapted titles are distributed through Platon.
2013 : 185 titles adapted
2014 : objective is 250 titles
New : Other associations can adapt these files : they are
uploaded by publishers on Platon platform.
In a near future : accessibility as the rule, not as the exception
Positive consequence of the Rentrée Littéraire operation :
Helping publishers to move from pull to push, and to think
about accessibility more as the rule than as the exception.
SNE and French Publishing Groups support Readium
Foundation from the beginning.
This Foundation works on acceleration of EPUB3 adoption, and
EPUB3, when fully supported, is an accessible format.
« (…) just putting your ebooks into EPUB 3 isn’t by itself
enough. EPUB 3 allows accessibility features to be added to
any ebook – but doesn’t mandate them. » (Mark Bide)
