The Business Case for VDI•Reduce PC refresh rates and costs•Increase access to software

▫Students and employees•Improve desktop support function

▫Reduce management tasks & related costs▫Deliver higher level of service

•Go “green”

Page 5: VMware & Unidesk Customer Webinar: Menlo College

5

Success Criteria•All users, all use cases

▫ Not big enough to justify VDI for only a subset of our users

•Low up-front capital costs▫ Mid-budget year▫ Deploy VDI for about the same cost as new PCs

•Better manageability▫ Enable lean IT staff to do more

•24X7 remote access▫ Virtual computing lab, telecommuters, mobile access

6

Use Cases (All Users)• Faculty & Staff

▫ Persistent desktops that maintain all persona customizations: profile settings, data, user-installed apps and plug-ins

• Classrooms/Instructional labs▫ Non-persistent desktops configured with specific

applications, e.g. Dreamweaver, QuickBooks

• Library/Student general access▫ Non-persistent kiosk-style desktops for general access

• Special-purpose desktops – New with VDI▫ Desktops used for one specific application, e.g. Jenzabar

Success: Remote Access Easier“I work primarily from home. The virtual desktop is SO much better than VPN, which I used for almost three years. With VDI I can work virtually (no pun intended...well, maybe) as long as I want without worrying about the connection shutting down and disrupting my work. As a result, I accomplish more in less time.”

Success: Convenient & Easy to Use“…I have enjoyed the use of the virtual desktop for my class. It has been very convenient to be able to access applications from a separate computer without taking up memory space on the computer that I was actually using. The Virtual Desktop became even more convenient when it was available for us to use on our computers in the comfort of our rooms. Sure there were a few bugs but there was always a computer available that was up and running to complete the necessary assignments for my class. Besides being convenient, it was very easy to use as well. The set up for my own computer was easy to follow and took no time at all.”
