What is wave power?

• Wave power is a renewable energy source.

• Three types of wave energy collector– Buoyant Moored Device– Hinged Contour Device– Oscillating Water Column

Buoyant Moored Device

• This type of device floats on the surface of the water or below it.

Hinged Contour Device

• This type of device follows the motion of the waves, it creates power using the motion at the joints.

Oscillating Water Column (OWC)

• This method of generating power from the tide works by using a column of water as a piston to pump air and drive a turbine to generate power.

Future of Wave Power• In the US the energy

company Finavera were granted the first ever license issued by the United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a wave, tidal or current energy project

• Finavera have also signed an agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) for a two Megawatt wave energy project off the coast of California.
