What?
QbE (Query by Example) is an ad-hoc queryingengine that allows the users to:
• define queries in a visual way
• execute queries
• save queries for further executions
• export results
When?
QbE can be useful when:
• The final user must have free access to data sources
• Focus is on data inquiry and not on final output layout

What?
Smart Filter engine is an ad-hoc data filteringengine that allows users to:
• Create enquiry forms in a visual way
• Filter data on a predefined view through those forms
• Group results
• Drill into details for each results' group

When?
Smart Filter can be useful when:
• users have to inquiry and watch the data through several filtering criteria
• users need a simpler approach than the query metaphor

Step 1: fill form
Step 2: submit form
Step 3: analyze result
Master table shows a summary of records satisfying the form inputs and aggregated measures calculated on the selected grouping variables
Step 4: drill into details
By clicking on a row of the master table, the user can see the detailed records satisfying form inputs for the context values of the grouping variables

Smart Filter document creation
Developers can build the Smart Filter document using the Web GUI, starting from document's detail page
Step 1 : select datamart
The system asks the developer user the existing datamart to start with; all the information contained in the datamartdocument will be inherited by the Smart Filter document
Step 2: define the base query
Then the developer has to define the base query with QbE GUI: the result of this query is the data domain which the Smart Filter will inquiry on.
Step 2: define the base query
Step 3: test the base query
Step 4: select form designer tab
Form design tab
Form preview tab
Save form configuration
Step 5: add a static close filter
Click here to add a new static close filter group
Click here in order to retrieve the fields returned by the base query
Step 6: configure the static close filter

Check boxes
Step 7: populate the static close filter
Add a new option
Step 7: populate the static close filter
Step 7: populate the static close filter
Step 7: populate the static close filter
Step 8: add another static close filter
NOTE: You can have more than one static close filter
Step 8: add another static close filter
Step 8: add another static close filter
Step 8: add another static close filter
NOTE: A filter option may contain more than one condition, as shown in the figure below
Step 9: add an open filter
Dragging a query field into the Static open filters section, the relevant wizard appears
Step 9: add an open filter
Filling the wizard, you define a new static open filter
Step 10: add another open filter
NOTE: You can have more than one static open filter

Step 11: add a dynamic filter
Step 11: add a dynamic filter
Dragging query fields, you define the variables for the dynamic filter
Step 12: select grouping variables
Dragging query fields, you define the grouping variables. You can use more than one field as grouping variable
