Whispering Winds: Can we negotiate with Nature?
"Figure3. The economy as an open subsystem of the ecosystem" diagram from Herman Daly's Beyond Growth book of 1996, page 49. The book says "Since the ecosystem remains constant in scale as the economy grows, it is inevitable that over time the economy becomes larger relative to the containing ecosystem. This transition from an ‘empty world’ to a ‘full world’ is depicted….”
Whispering Winds: Can we negotiate with Nature?
Figure 1. Three hypothetical landscapes illustrating the types and magnitude of services associated with different types of ecosystems. Natural ecosystems can support many ecosystem services at high levels, but not food production. An intensive cropland produces food in abundance, but comparatively little of the other services. A managed cropland can support a broad portfolio of ecosystem services (Foley et al. 2005, with permission).
