7 November 2008 Packt Publishing awarded Plone Best Other Open
Source CMS for 2008. Other category is for application servers not
running on PHP/My SQL. Run on the Zope application server, Plone
wins the Best Other Open Source CMS Award and receives $2,000 for
the Plone Foundation.
The judges were particularly complimentary about Plones
extensible platform and level of support for non functional
requirements. The judges liked how the development team had spent
time making sure that the average user can get Plone up and running
quickly and easily.
There was particular praise for the ecosystem that is developing
around Python and Zope is encouraging. "With Google's App Engine
offering Python support, I felt that it is possible to very quickly
have a cloud-based Plone implementation in place, and that could
really spur its adoption" noted one judge.The four judges and the
public vote put Plone ahead of dotCMS, DotNetNuke, Umbraco and
mojoPortal in the category that is eligible for non PHP/MySQL
Content Management Systems.

Measuring or quantifying security risks in software is pretty
tough stuff. But one interesting measure I found was the number of
vulnerabilities reported by the MITREs Common Vulnerabilities and
Exposures database, which is the main source for tracking and
naming such things.
Here are some counts of the numbers of known vulnerabilities and
exposures in some common CMS platforms and their technology
stacks:

This data proves nothing, and suggests lots of things. To me, it
suggests that PHP is a horribly insecure programming language
compared with Python, Perl and Ruby, and that CMS frameworks that
use PHP have some huge security obstacles to overcome.
The Zope team is so confident in its security, though, that its
pursuing Common Criteria certification for Zope 3. (Common Criteria
is an international common set of standards for evaluating IT
security.)

Here is an illustration of the relative costs to install and
customize three highly rated Enterprise Content Management systems
with extensive features. Although costs vary widely depending on
type of implementation, type of organization and location, here are
representative examples for three implementations.
Plone is licensed under the full Open Source GPL license. Plone
is managed by the not-for-profit Plone Foundation and supported by
a large community of dedicated volunteer developers (100 +) . There
are no fees for licenses ever. Your are free to modify the source
code. Plone comes with numerous features and there are many tested
and supported free plug-ins to give you all the functionality you
want. All of your budget can be used to customize Plone for your
particular needs.
Alfresco is another type of open source CMS sometimes called
Professional Open Source. Alfresco was founded by technology
entrepreneurs and is maintained by paid developers. It is licensed
under the LGPL 2 license which allows the company to charge for
certain categories of licenses. The commercial license costs
$15,000 to $20,000 USD per year. This is added to $35,000 USD for
customizing for your particular needs.
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 offers a highly CMS
application which provides similar functionality to Plone and
Alfresco. Microsoft licenses Internet Facing SharePoint Server for
$40,943 and the client licenses (CALS) for $94 each or $9400 in
this example with 100 licenses for a total of $50,343 USD before
any customizing themes or content.
